The Grip of Fandom…
Perusing WordPress, I happened across an article about fandom from this site. Yes, it’s a post about Robert Pattinson and Twilight, but what was interesting to me was how the first part of the post could be applied universally to any fandom.
I know I said I’d made peace but I still take issue with it — the gravitational pull associated with being a fan.
You start out being mildly interested. Then you become intrigued. Then you become so intrigued that you actually spend time documenting your snow-balling fascination.
Soon you start talking to others who are similarly afflicted and your passion grows stronger still. You start to commune and feel some sort of primal, deeply rooted attachment; it’s important for some reason. A sense of glee blooms out of that; you can’t get by without it. Or you don’t want to.
Knowing that you’re not alone (as evidenced by member counts on fan sites and the number of mainstream media outlets that have resorted to dedicated news feeds and their own coded versions of girlish squeals) makes it a little bit easier to feel okay about what you know, deep down, must be a sickness. But that doesn’t change the fact that you’ve become infected.
You always thought you were immune to this stuff.
But you’re not.
Being a Twilight fan is odd. It should be odd. But Twilight fandom gave way to Edward fandom and Edward appreciation has now given way, almost totally, to being a Roboholic because, at this point, you have pretty much eclipsed your character. (For the record, I didn’t coin that phrase. It’s just something the kids R texting.)
Due to your well publicized, explosive effect on women, I’ll never look good talking you up. I’ll always come off as ridiculous walking out of the store with that GQ tucked under my arm. It’s assumed that if I’m buying something that is associated with you, I must be one of those chicks who has lost her god damn mind. So, as I physically moved forward last week toward the entrance to the bookstore, I was, in fact, shrinking away from it on the inside.
The magazine section on the third floor was dragging me closer. I had to see the April issue for myself. I had to hold it. I had to pass by the young adult section to get there and it was tricked out — still – with those ominous and oh-so-familiar black and crimson books …
Fucking fuck.
You don’t even like GQ.
It’s true. In terms of men’s magazines I’m generally only going to buy either Details or Complex.
So why are you disrupting your schedule right now to go pick this thing up?
So, take away the Twilight reference and insert the Taylor Hicks fandom of drama. Who hasn’t been there and done that?

OK, maybe this is off topic, and was listed on the previous post a short time ago, but I need to repeat it, regarding the marketing of “The Distance”.
As much as I NOW love this CD, I have to say that, in it’s first week, it appears to be a real mess on the marketing side. This whole Target thing, with no exclusive track in MANY stores is a major problem. I’ve gone to 5 Target stores now and have yet to find the CD with IAOK, (here in So. Cal.) I know that others have had the same problem.
And the WalMart fiasco where it can only be ordered on-line. What’s that about? How come none of the stores have the physical copies on their shelves ready to just pick up and purchase? I haven’t heard from anyone that has that version in their hands the first week out.
And now for iTunes, it already appears that after less than one week, it is already off the list of the 100 best sellers. I, for one, only downloaded YWC, since I already bought the CD at Target. I did order the CD (on-line) from WalMart so I could add HNH to my collection, but I have no idea when I’ll be receiving that.
I guess my point is, who was the original Einstein who felt havind 3, actually 4 (Amazon) (UPDATE: 5 now! Best Buy) different configurations of the CD was a good idea? How many copies of one CD does one really need? At this point, I’ll be ending up with 3. And it’s not like I can give any of them as gifts because they’ll all be opened.
In this economy, this marketing plan was a BAD, BAD idea. And the way I see it, the whole situation has left a bad taste in my mouth about it all. I think this plan of the 3 exclusive tracks (at 5 different retailers!) has actually backfired and, in turn, will ultimately affect the overall sales of a very good CD. I actually feel very bad for Taylor because of it.
Sometimes it’s best to just keep it simple. All 14 songs should have been available one just 1 CD (they would all fit) and sold in all locations in question. At the very least, maybe just have the “exclusive” track available at only Target. Just sayin.. (again).
March 16, 2009 at 11:37 am
I think this is on topic!
March 16, 2009 at 11:45 am
Those chicks he’s posing with…who are they? Never heard of them.
March 16, 2009 at 12:00 pm
The blond one with the pink jacket is Poppy Montgomery who is an actress. The Spanish girl is from Scrubs.
March 16, 2009 at 12:03 pm
I don’t care for Taylor “striking a pose”. When you’re already sexy, you don’t have to try to be sexy.
Snow, those were girls were at the “walk for the cure” benefit that Taylor performed at for cancer research yesterday in L.A.
Taylor is definitely workin’ it. I give him a lot of credit for that.
But I will be glad when he’s performing a new song, not WRIR. It’s time to move on from that one.
March 16, 2009 at 12:07 pm
They are actresses without many roles. Catch the video of him singing 7 Mile at Susan G Koman. He has gotten so thin that I could not detect any double chin during yesterdays performance. I think he has lost 10lbs since he was at Martyrs. Don’t think even Caryl could spot any fat on him now!
March 16, 2009 at 12:11 pm
yes, it actually is. Thanks mama.
March 16, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Rosie – He really has gotten too thin. I think I’ll bring him a sandwich when I see him at The Roxy. And maybe a “cheeseburger” too.
LOL (wink wink)
March 16, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Where is the video? I like that song.
March 16, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Maybe how he’s lost the weight. Too many “cheeseburgers”.
That’s a good way to burn calories. Think about it.
March 16, 2009 at 12:48 pm
“maybe that;s how…”
March 16, 2009 at 12:56 pm
I understand the fandom thing, and how each one of them is the same but different. But, what I don’t get is Edward Cullen is a fictitious character that Robert Pattison just so happens to play in the movie.
Women actually fight over a seventeen year old make believe vampire?
Shit. The SP isn’t so bad afterall. 😆
March 16, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Did you see the video of Taylor signing the billboard? He looks VERY thin. I may have to rethink my whole postiion on my status as a fangirl.
March 16, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Rosie, I thought the same thing he has lost some weight, looking like he did during his 07 tour. I went and looked to see if I could find 7 Miles Breakdown only found Honky Tonk, WRIR and Star Spangled Banner. I’d like to see it also.
JI
March 16, 2009 at 1:00 pm
VS, Thought kinda of the same thing as I read, this is a character in a show, Taylor was on a show also but as himself. Saw some simalarites there though.
JI
March 16, 2009 at 1:08 pm
OMG! Further proof that he reads this blog!! He lost weight for us.
Now, the only question remaining is: will that comment wind up on Idletard or greyish?
March 16, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I don’t think I worded what I wanted to say right. I’m out of it today.
I take it there’s a faction that really believe that Robert Pattison is really Edward Cullen? Did people really believe that video clip was really Taylor? Ugh.
Taylor’s “RuPaul Cat Walk Sexy Pursed Lips.. Work It..” look is cute. I wonder what possessed him to even do that? There’s one pose where he looks like he’s trying out for the role of Bosley on Charlie’s Angels with that pose.
Damn that boy is getting way, way to thin…
March 16, 2009 at 1:18 pm
JI, Honkey Tonk is 7 Mile, he does a long guitar riff before singing it. He said he wrote it, SAY WHAT! He works the crowd and sings it so well and it is becoming my favorite.
March 16, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I think that Robert Pattison is “fugly”.
Who are these girls making a big deal over HIM???? EWWWWW!!!!
March 16, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Thin like a fox!
(?)
March 16, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Seven Mile he introduces as some Honkey Tonk that he wrote awhile back! Blondi, on the BB has all the vids and some stills from yesterday. You can find them under Multi media, Race For The Cure. I’m loving his performance of it and the song is becoming my fav. Watched it again and see NO double chin and with him being so thin his eyes really pop. I think he is now even thinner than he was in Dec. 2006. Guess it is the 8 shows a week, traveling and the press and shadow tours. If he were to darken his hair, I think thin, dark Tay would get fans, why even younger ones than Snow!
March 16, 2009 at 1:27 pm
LoL, I think he reads the blog. I wonder what he thinks of me? 😉
I’m sure he loves me. haha!
March 16, 2009 at 1:32 pm
He did a fantastic Star Spangled Banner also.
March 16, 2009 at 1:33 pm
The three videos are on youtube: WRIR, 7 Mile and the SSB.
March 16, 2009 at 1:45 pm
SS, Here is the llink for 7 Mile Breakdown, haven’t had time to listen to everything today, very busy at work:
JI
March 16, 2009 at 1:48 pm
a “silver” fox! (too easy)
March 16, 2009 at 1:58 pm
These shots were funny…just another side of Taylor being a hambone.
I like an in-shape Taylor…but he needs his clothes to fit better, ya know?
He may need to add another suitcase in order to carry several sets of sizes to make sure he isn’t swimming in his duds.
March 16, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Ugh…the comment is way too relatable to me…
“So, as I physically moved forward last week toward the entrance to the bookstore, I was, in fact, shrinking away from it on the inside.”
I feel that oddly sickening, yet compelled feeling when I am
a) searching in the store for a Taylor CD
b) doing like this person, looking for a magazine with Taylor in it
c) driving to another state to see a Taylor concert…. (did this only once, and I had a sick sis in law as an adjacent excuse).
I have done this fan thing only once or twice before….
and I ain’t telling who the “star” was….. as I do have eclectic tastes.
March 16, 2009 at 2:01 pm
VS, Yes he sounded great!!! 🙂 Tahts the only one that I have listened to so far.
JI
March 16, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Thanks for the link JI. I just love SMB (which he did write w/ Wynn Christian). He TOTALLY tore it up when he played it at the Belly Up! LOTS OF HARP! Much more than that clip, and it had a more guitar driven sound.
I can’t wait to see him at The Roxy! I want to hear SMB, as well as “Once Upon A Lover” and “Maybe You Should”. He has to play that one!
Since this is his first real concert since the CD release, I think they’ll be playing a LOT of the songs from the CD. I’ll make sure to bring a re-cap back after Wednesday.
March 16, 2009 at 2:12 pm
please tell us!
March 16, 2009 at 2:25 pm
tf06- Get some bootleg video. 😈
March 16, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Oh yeah. Do it. I’ll post it. 😆
March 16, 2009 at 2:43 pm
I can totally relate, Suze.
March 16, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Soon you start talking to others who are similarly afflicted and your passion grows stronger still. You start to commune and feel some sort of primal, deeply rooted attachment; it’s important for some reason. A sense of glee blooms out of that; you can’t get by without it. Or you don’t want to.

But that doesn’t change the fact that you’ve become infected.
You always thought you were immune to this stuff.
But you’re not.
But yet, here we sit, commenting on his percieved weight loss, his posing for the camera, performance videos, and every nuance.
I have seen the enemy, and he is us.
HA!
March 16, 2009 at 3:19 pm
So, he did a little interview at the Race For The Cure and he said, “You always gotta make time for the ladies!” I believe he’s talking about us. That’s right, the ladies he’s making time for are those of us who post here. Yay, us!
Now that I know this, I’m going to spruce up my name and make it look prettier. *giggle*
March 16, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Is ‘carylita’ prettier?
March 16, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Maybe I need a new name too. I think this one makes my ass look fat.
March 16, 2009 at 3:36 pm
haha!
March 16, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Yummy….Robert Pattinson.
What is this blog about again?
haha!
March 16, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Oh wow! Taylor gave us a shout-out!
March 16, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Yep, and he and Elliott sang A Womans Gotta Have It just for us. Where is it Taylor? He just knows me by Rosie so I get mine first.
March 16, 2009 at 4:00 pm
“Oh my carylita.. love was so much much sweeta..”
😆
March 16, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Carylita, are you the inspiration behind “Once Upon a Lover?” 😆
March 16, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Have we reinvented ourself?
JI
March 16, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Maybe when there is a thread appropriated to “other people we’ve had star fixations on”, I will put that amongst all yours, o.k.?
All I have to say is “What’s wrong with you is what’s wrong with me”. 🙂
March 16, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Not fat, VS, your ass is “bootyliscious”!! LOL!
March 16, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Gripping someone’s fandom….which sounds interesting, actually.
March 16, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Damn, it IS all about us, ain’t it?!?
I was blind, but now I see…. 😉
March 16, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Too me thiness is a turn off, but it’s too late- I like the guy as a person. I do think he’ll continue to go up and down in weight. When you love to eat, It’s a never ending struggle.
March 16, 2009 at 4:35 pm
*batting my eyes demurely*
March 16, 2009 at 4:36 pm
I got your fandom right here..!
March 16, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Off Topic Alert!
This may be the weirdest thing you ever heard…but it can’t be worse than my Apocolypse Now post huh? 🙂
Do you guys think Taylor would mind if 50 of my students downloaded two of his songs from iTunes, listened to them and critiqued them for me? I told them they had to use iTunes to get the tunes and that Limewire DL’s are not acceptable. My question is how can I tell if a DL was through itunes? I am really out of the loop there. I want them to go on and listen to each one and then choose two songs that interest them from the new CD, this way they may enjoy it more since it was their choice.
Foolish of me to care OR it is a cool idea and we’ll get some great feedback?
Let’s hear. I thought that Taylor might like to know what the kids think, he may not care either, I really don’t know.
BL
This is just an idea by the way, I have proposed it to the kids and 50 teens offered to do it.
March 16, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Why don’t you just play the songs in class BL? It’s not a new idea. Another teacher did it on the Boogie.
The results weren’t at all what she thought they’d be. How would Taylor know what your students thought?
The bigger question is why would you want to impart your obesssion on your students?
March 16, 2009 at 5:25 pm
yes, Taylor’s dropped a few. So, it’s not the photographers fault he looks like a bobblehead in the cd pic..;)
This is OT but I was just reading over at the Greyish blog and she had a new post up that she’s been misunderstood and is closing the blog, but now I see that post is gone as quickly as it appeared. Rosie’s comment in the “tardized” post has been deleted also. Maybe Ms Ish had second thoughts.
March 16, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I am not just any teacher.
Well VS I will let you know what they think. I am going to conduct an amazing study. Including Clarkson, Underwood, and Hicks. The students are going to listen to two songs from these three Idols and crititue all of them. It is called a blind study. Also, the kids are not listening to actually critique Taylor, they listening to each song and relating it to motivation as they study. They have to study while they listen and comment and critique the ability of the song to motivate. Don’t worry VS. If I ma obsessed VS, it isn’t with Taylor’s effing chest hair. I could not care less about that to be honest, I am not swooning. I am interested in seeing Taylor have information and feedback from someone besides us and the stupid critics. What can it hurt? it can’t since the kids I know, love me, and will see anything I show them in a postive light. If it turns on one kid to his music and he gains a fan, well that will be that kids lucky day won’t it?
Just leave me alone now because I am only trying to help Taylor succeed and I don’t see how it can be bad to impart his beautiful soul on someone.
BL
March 16, 2009 at 5:42 pm
ROFLMAO!
March 16, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Dammit, Carylita, no wonder he can’t think straight these days. Try letting his fandom breathe.
Wha?
March 16, 2009 at 5:51 pm
BL- You asked for feedback. I gave it to you. You didn’t like it so you lash out.. Thanks for being such a kind soul.
You didn’t answer my question. How will he ever see your students reviews?
March 16, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I didn’t lash out but you called me obsessive and I don’t appreciate that.
I seem to be the only one who doesn’t drool on here so I consider my intentions more professional in regards to Taylor Hicks and less “obsessive.” I am a writer incase you forgot, and I am interested inhis new album from that standpoint lyrically speaking.
I meant no harm to you VS, you should know that.
I will just keep my results to myself as I won’t upset any one here with them if that’s what you think.
Sorry.
BL
March 16, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Taylor will be at the Santa Clarita Wal-Mart on Thur from 4-6 signing cd’s. If you are around that area there’s your chance. 😉
March 16, 2009 at 6:24 pm
What happened to Idletard anyway???
March 16, 2009 at 6:35 pm
BL- I’m not going to get into semantics with you and weigh in on why you’re a better fan because you don’t drool etc..
You’ve completely misunderstood my point. I don’t care if you post your results or not. I was trying to tell you that when another teacher tried this experiment, it failed miserably. What I’ve asked you now for the third time is where or how would Taylor ever see these results?
How would I know you’re a writer or anything about you other than what you post?
March 16, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Littlewing, She deleted me and all I recall writing was that she was getting a little too nasty. She hinted my post was nasty! ME nasty!!!
March 16, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Smartie’s still there.
March 16, 2009 at 6:47 pm
I think he’s hawt but then I’m weird anyway.
March 16, 2009 at 6:49 pm
suze you’re funny.
March 16, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I sort of like you cause you amuse me at times, but I have to tell you your experiment is a waste of time. Teens are not and never will be his main audience.
March 16, 2009 at 6:54 pm
She killed me off too and I was having some good clean fun. Man, it’s hard to find new playmates. What was funny is she comes out snarky on all of us but when anything snarky goes her way she’s not likin’ it. lol She did not like my BBQ post at Shitshack or IdolSnooze. *mopes*
March 16, 2009 at 6:55 pm
You can email me the results Bright, I’d put them up on IdolSnooze or Shitshack.
March 16, 2009 at 6:57 pm
I haven’t needed a drool nappy in a long while Bright. Drooling is gross. LOL
March 16, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Dang, I’m drooling over his hot, young , slim , sexy body and gorgeous handsome face . I’m professional and ponder his lyrics and movements. Heck I can take it all in, or all of it in!
March 16, 2009 at 6:58 pm
I’m all about it being about us. Man, we have a whole “Social Experiment” 🙄 going on at the Greyish site all about us. We be kewl.
March 16, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Why does anyone even care what Greyish says or does? The more he/she sees that he/she has hit a nerve the longer it’ll continue.
March 16, 2009 at 7:00 pm
I drool and I’m proud God dammit.
March 16, 2009 at 7:08 pm
He’s looking fine in those pics, Ro. Best I’ve ever seen him. I like his lean mean frame.
March 16, 2009 at 7:11 pm
I don’t care what she says. I tried to play with her even just to see what up in the Ish house and well, not much apparently. She’s just another anonymouse traveler in the internets tapping her 15 Minutes. 😛
March 16, 2009 at 7:25 pm
On the contrary, Rosie, you were not nasty at all…just being observant and straightforward. It’s a pretty funny blog, but yeah, there seem to be some undertones there that I can’t support. i.e. attacking/mocking a fellow Taylor fan. Most of these counter bloggers don’t seem to realize that most of us don’t give a sh!t about who done what, where they did it, or who they did it to.
March 16, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Well now I was yelled at for accusing that Ish of being 15. Just used 15’s little saying. We all know 15 doesn’t have talent for snarking. More like sharking. LOL
I’m making Barbecue chicken tonight with grilled squash. I do love to use my grill. hahaha
March 16, 2009 at 7:31 pm
spin, I saw your post over at shitsha.., er I mean spinshack, LOL, now there is some creativity! and it just so happens I agree with every word you said (nothing against that blogger, but I’m just not into all that spiteful crap. Get that enough in the real world.)
March 16, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Thank you littlewing, sadly she just got mad at me. 😎
Ah well.
March 16, 2009 at 7:43 pm
OK-I’m going to do the fan-girly thing and go see T at Wal-Mart on Thur to have him sign my cd….OMG! (What am I doing?) Rosie, you are a bad influence on me girl!
March 16, 2009 at 7:44 pm
casualfan… I refuse to “squee” I’m just not that far gone. But, I will drool a bit. 🙂
March 16, 2009 at 7:45 pm
I may have to drool….and I swore I wouldn’t. =(
March 16, 2009 at 7:47 pm
BBQ chick sounds delish! The squash I can do without. Do you use brown sugar?
March 16, 2009 at 8:03 pm
CF, Go for it, we will be waiting to hear how it goes!!! 🙂

March 16, 2009 at 8:04 pm
VS, I think we all do at times 🙂
JI
March 16, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Oh, he’s GORGEOUS in person. The Belly Up, Grease, The Roxy.
March is great for Tay fans in CA. I don’t want him to leave.
I’ll say hi for you on Wed.!!! Can’t. WAIT!
March 16, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I will give a play by play account 😉
March 16, 2009 at 9:15 pm
I’m excited by six degrees of separation via Casual. I hope he is wearing new slim fitting jeans. Casual, casually check out his measurements and report back.
March 16, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Finally! I had to tell Taylor to get the heck off me. He was sitting on my back and singing, “Once upon a lover, once upon a lover of mine…” He thought it was hysterical. Me? Not so much.
March 16, 2009 at 9:18 pm
(I love that- ISH. hahaha!!)
March 16, 2009 at 9:20 pm
AHAHHAHAHAHA!! God, Caryl…you make me laugh!!
ahahahhahahhah!!
March 16, 2009 at 9:23 pm
Hey! You know what I just remembered? I have a chat room over at my old blog. It’s probably pretty dusty and full of cobwebs, but you’re all welcome to use it if you want to. I’ll go turn on the lights for ya. (just click on my name and scroll all the way to the bottom.)
March 16, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Not only dusty, but lonely. 😦
March 16, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Don’t forget that Taylor is on Chelsea Lately tonight.
*cringes*
March 16, 2009 at 9:38 pm
I scrolled, but can’t find the door….is there a secret knock or something?
March 16, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Nah, it’s there. Open to all. Maybe you need to wait a minute for it to load. That’s what always happens to me.
March 16, 2009 at 9:42 pm
I was just viewing an old Prince video where he held a press conference about his name change. He said one thing that stood out for me and reminds me of Taylor Hicks.
“Let the maker make the bread” Powerful words indeed.
March 16, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Late to the convo as always, but only in my humble little opinion do I say that I do not like model cheekbones on Taylor . . .
*back to lurkville* 🙂
March 16, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I’m with U Pip…Taylor looks much better with some plump on him. He needs to lay off the Progresso Chicken soup and get some southern food in him
March 16, 2009 at 10:24 pm
He’s gonna be there to sign. You have to go and represent! haha
March 16, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Chelsea was way to easy on him.
March 16, 2009 at 10:34 pm
I did not see it. *squinting* Is it on the T Tuesday or the a-caryling?
March 16, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Missed it dammit. Had other things going on, but I taped it for Tues. If you missed it show will re-air Tuesday forget the time, just had Tivo catch the next ep with Hicks.
March 16, 2009 at 10:37 pm
I like them he’s looking his age now – the extra poundage puts years on a person.
March 16, 2009 at 10:51 pm
a-caryling
March 16, 2009 at 10:53 pm
He must have looked her hard in the eye and scared the crap out of her! Good boy!
March 16, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Caryl it was his in-thinness hawtness that did her in, likely. I’ll go check your site. Maybe it’s this damn laptop.
March 16, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Caryl? Caryl who?
😉
March 16, 2009 at 11:13 pm
