You can only please some of the people half the time…

thbozo

So, earlier tonight, Adam Lambert sent this series of tweets:

Hey guys. I have gotten a few negative messages about not signing autographs. Sorry If anyone is dissapointed.
I feel bad but please understand that I try to give you guys 110% on stage. Your ticket is to see us perform! Entitlement is not sexy…
I Loooooooooove and am deeply grateful to my fans who made idol a dream come true. I feel that I express that love in my performance.Thank u
Thanks to those of you who “get it” You guys are so rad. The messages were really thoughtful. A few of you need to quit being so negative.

So, that got me thinking…what if Taylor had been that upfront with his fans? What if from the beginning, instead of being the “southern gentleman”, what if he twittered and said something like, “Save your money. I don’t need anyone to buy me wild bald eagles, or to name a star after me…just spend your money on my tour and cd’s” ?

Oh, could you even imagine the backlash? 😉

What do you think is better? Being yourself with fans, not catering to the bullshit that inevitably happens? Or being quiet, trying to make everybody happy?

  1. Ultimately I have to say be real. Be human. show them you ain’t the messiah, you’re just a dude. I wonder what kind of backlash Adam will get for saying those things?

  2. It seems really strange to me that the idols from every other season could manage to sign autographs and give 110% at their performance. I only went to the season 5 show, but all of them were out signing for the fans. No one said he had to do it for hours..but come on he’s no more special than the others. I like Adam..but this is a little more like wimpy to me …not being real. If this is real..then I’d say the real Adam had better get a grip this is showbiz…At least until he’s a somebody.

  3. I really have no experience at the Idol shows with signing autographs…and I, too, only went to Season 5 tour. But, I would have to say kudos to Adam to standing up to the fans and letting them know that he will not bend to them. Honestly, I don’t think he’ll get much backlash…he’s already put himself out there as one who does what he wants, so that’s good.

  4. I don’t like Adam, never have. Nothing about his performances suggests to me that he truly connects to the music, if that makes any sense. But I think ANYone just starting out needs to try to be a little more accommodating to his fans. I know that some fans can be so OTT as to be scary, but that’s why security is there. I would guess that most people in the public eye would sometimes like to tell the fans to shove it. But it is in their best interest to smile and deal with it – and then, as Taylor does, escape for awhile with friends to some place where the fans are not. Taylor seems to have reached a “good place” in his interactions with fans. He wasn’t always as comfortable with it as he is now. Adam probably created a bit of a firestorm, but the hype surrounding him is so strong that I don’t think it will have any lasting negative affect on his popularity.

  5. jerseyirish Says:

From what I have been reading Adam has become somewhat of a diva. I agree with Meg he is just starting out and should make the effort for his fans and get out there and sign autographs like the others. Haven’t been to any Idol tour shows but from what folks have said that is part of the fun the Idols coming out spending time and signing, myself I think Adam is making a mistake with this approach. His tweet comes off as a little arrogant to me, like your not worth my time.

    JI

  6. See, I don’t get that from him at all. I just see it as being realistic. He’s right, the price of a ticket doesn’t include an autograph. Just my opinion.

  7. I agree with Meg and JI. Those who attend the AI tour are for the most part fans who voted for the idols. That gives them a special right to expect an autograph. Without that TV show most wouldn’t even get the chance to have fans. Don’t the top ten make about $300,000 thousand on the tour? Those 10 people are where they are this summer due to the number of votes they got from Idol viewers and those who attend the tour deserve some courtesy.

  8. Sometimes when you’re just baaaarely starting out, you have to do at least a little bit of catering. Yeah every fanbase has their share crazies, especially with Idols, but you’re barely starting out and you don’t want a backlash, you know? That is just how the showbiz is. I’ve noticed the other Idols, including Kris Allen the winner, don’t seem to be having this problem.
Plus I agree that Adam is kinda diva-ish these days. I liked him initially but his performances bored me after a while, same ol stuff.

  9. Well remember, Taylor hated doing the autographs and stuff in the beginning too. I remember reading how he hid under the blanket that was wrapped around Princess P so he could pass by without the fans seeing.

  10. Grey…I personally feel that you have to bend somewhat to your fans..They are essentialy your bread & butter, I don’t think any fans expect their “star” to sign for every person in line, but the security can stop it after only a few minutes..but the fans are happy to see you a least put in the effort to see them. Not bending for your fans is kinda like not bending for your boss…we’d all like to say NO but they sign the pay check, so we make consessions..that’s called being a grown up.

  11. Hope Taylor found a happy mix between being himself and pleasing his fans. I do tend to think he is a nice decent person and heck I’m still high over his Rogue songs. He intriqued me all over again when he sat and sang Domino and played the harp. Guess Adam and Taylor each have to go on part instinct like all of us.

  12. I think part of the problem is that Idol fans thing they are owed something because they voted. In my opinion, that’s just simply not true. Honestly, I bet Adam Lambert has already twittered more than Taylor. It’s not like Adam doesn’t keep in touch. Just because you voted does not entitle you to an autograph or anything else, for that matter.

  13. blueberry Says:

I’ve never asked for an autograph so it’s easy for me to say it’s not a big deal if someone doesn’t give one. My only expectation is regarding the performance that I’ve paid to see. It seems to me that some performers may be completely comfortable with their craft, but not so much with the one on one stuff. That shouldn’t be a problem.

  14. mamaforpeace Says:

I love many parts of my job. When I am in the classroom with the kids and parents (I teacn in a co-op school) I give at least 110%. Some things I really don’t like, mainly the paper work and record keeping. But it’s all part of the job I signed up to do, for way less money than Adam Lambert gets! Part of being a star is giving up a bit of your “personal space”. Hopefully, they are successful at preserving a lot of privacy, but signing a few autographs deosn’t seem like a big intrusion of privacy. It may not be something “owed”, but it’s implied I think in the job description. I like Adam. He was my favorite on AI. But IMO, he is being a bit of an ass here!

  15. mamaforpeace Says:

I never heard of teacning, but teaching is a real job:)

  16. I don’t bother with Autographs but I do see how much it pleases people. It was hard for Tayor because he was so shy but he is doing so much better now. I love hearing about the interactions. It makes for Good PR when it’s done right. I love Adam but I think he’s making a mistake. Maybe Ringo Starr can get away with it but Adam’s not there yet. LOL. I can see maybe not doing it when you are out in private life BUT at shows Yes… That’s part of the job.

  17. blueberry Says:

“Part of being a star is giving up a bit of your “personal space”. ”

This may be how it is, but in a perfect world it shouldn’t be. I think we know way too much about certain stars. Granted some of them put themselves out there, but just because a person possesses a gift they are willing to share, shouldn’t mean they should lose any more of their personal space than the average Joe does. I don’t see how any interaction with a star adds to the performance they’ve given if they are uncomfortable with that interaction.

  18. So, if somebody didn’t vote for an Idol, but still got an autograph, what does that mean? Is that like stealing it?

  19. “I don’t see how any interaction with a star adds to the performance they’ve given if they are uncomfortable with that interaction.”

    It doesn’t! But it’s MARKETING 101. LOL.

What the hell are you talking about? Adam is correct in saying that the price of a tkt doesn’t include entitlement. The tkt clearly states: ADMISSION ONLY and doesn’t say anything about autographs or anything else. He along with everyone else on that tour are sleep deprived, essentially cut off from their families, friends and any kind of a personal life during the show and during this tour. They are pulled at, clawed at, screamed at by thousands of people who want a piece of them.

From what I have observed…they are all bending to the fans.

  21. I went to the Atlanta concert and stayed until the end, so I couldn’t get close to the barricades but I stood in the parking garage a couple of floors above and watched the Idols interact with fans. In Atlanta, it just so happened, there weren’t any incidents with rude or pushy fans, but two nights before Adam had been removed for safety reasons.

I agree completely with Grey. While on one hand, I cringed when I read the line, ” Entitlement isn’t sexy,” I didn’t cringe because he was wrong. He wasn’t. I cringed, waiting on the backlash I was afraid would befall him. Grey is right on two very important things. Idol contestants owe voters nothing in my opinion. No one is forced to vote by a contestant. When someone voluntarily picks up the phone to dial, that contract is between the voter and the phone company that the call goes through to the number that was dialed. If a ticket is bought, there should be a performance, if a CD purchased, songs on it. But that’s where the obligation stops. I’m a huge fan of Jon Bon Jovi, but it would never dawn on me he owes me some of his time after a concert. That’s different? really? How? Because votes were cast? Nope. That’s just the reason fans THINK they’re owed something. It’s wrong headed of them. No arms were twisted.

Also, Adam has set himself apart here, much the way he did with the RS article. He didn’t want details coming out over time, so he went ahead and laid it all out. I think here, he’s trying to let people know what kind of an entertainer he’ll be. He will usually bend to his fans and is very thankful, but is going to maintain a personal life that he controls. I say good for him for going ahead and taking the hits now so people know where he stands, instead of licking his finger and pointing it to the wind every morning when he gets up.

Besides, did the voters pay for his voice lessons? Did the voters live in one room studio in West L.A. for eight years? Are the voters the reason he’s where the he is? Well..kinda. But not completely. His hard work had a hand in it, so doesn’t he deserve a say in what happens in his life, as well? Why shouldn’t he? Fans didn’t put him there alone. His efforts are worth something, aren’t they?

I guess not, to some people. I notice nobody is worried about what the Idols are owed by the fans. How about some respect? They give months of entertainment, wear themselves ragged on the tour and people just complain. Maybe it’s time to turn the mirror around.

  22. jerseyirish Says:

Stangy, I believe from Season 1 this is what the Idols would do mingle with the fans before the show. Maybe this is something the Idol folks want, who knows, I just feel he should make the effort to spend some time with the folks that admire him, for me it is not about the voting but taking the time to care that they came out to see him. It just doesn’t look right when all the other top 10 are out signing and mingling and he isn’t, just my opinion. When I went to see Taylor and other performers on their own tours I felt the price of admission and seeing the show were all I was entitled to and did not go looking for anything else. This is different it is not their own tour it is the shows tour.

  23. Oh I know! A big part of me feels that way. In fact if I hadn’t been part of Taylor’s fandom and seen the odd paralyzing effect one can have, I would probably be the one screaming the loudest that it is an audience driven show, and he should get his Diva rear end out there! Lol I think I try to look ahead too much because of the past few years of watching some sectors of the SP. I completely agree with your concept.

  24. Just popping in to let IAG know that I enjoy her blog. The I, J, and K were well done and K was especialy well done. I often don’t post when there are other artist featured that don’t turn me on, because I would feel insincere if I said thanks for the video, I enjoyed it. I don’t take Grey, or her efforts towards her blog for granted. Sometimes I disagree a tad with her, but am so greatful for the open media of expression. Perhaps Adam could suck it up a tad and be a little more gracious. Being new to any job requires some extra effort and submission. Celebrity should be no different, IMO. The AI Idols are in a unique position, it is sort of a club. Even Kelly, Carrie, and Daughtry seem to get that and know had it not been for AI they would not be rich or famous. People who watch AI are very tuned into the Idols and the press they receive and the Idols risk censure by the public and press at every turn. I hope for Adam’s sake, not that I’m a fan, he gets it. He may well get rich and famous just doing his songs 110% and expressing his thoughts to fans, but going the extra mile can’t hurt. JI, you again said it well.

  25. He along with everyone else on that tour are sleep deprived, essentially cut off from their families, friends and any kind of a personal life during the show and during this tour. They are pulled at, clawed at, screamed at by thousands of people who want a piece of them.
————————————————————————————-cf….maybe Adam should have thought of that before he signed on the dotted line. He knew what he was getting into and accepted it gladly.
The tour from each season all had to go through the same thing..but that’s what they wanted…STARDOM!!!

  26. I attended four AI concerts in 2006 and an equal number of shadow tour shows . . . Taylor did not appear to the fans outside any of the venues I attended. Did I think that Taylor was a “diva” because I didn’t meet him? Nope . . . I just figured he had his reasons and it was his right to choose come out and meet the fans (or not) on any given night.

Adam has come out to meet the fans at many of the venues so far, and at some venues he has not come out. Just like Taylor did, back in 2006.

Just an observation to those who would suggest that Adam should become more “Taylor-like.” In this way, at least, he already is.

Oh, and I remember the “Taylor is getting too big for his britches” comments back then from fans who believed they owned a piece of Taylor because they voted for him.

  27. I don’t think anyone is suggesting that Adam be more Taylor- like. Not at all. I had different Taylor experiences. I have been to approx. 10 Taylor concerts incl. one AI show & Grease. He has come out after every one of them..but let me clarify…I was not seeking an autograph or any other interaction..just kind of went with the flow.If he had not come out that was fine also. But, Entitlement is not sexy..sounds a little harsh to me.I would think a little interaction with the fans was part of the job.
I worked for an aviation co. that catered to private aircraft .We had a rock group in one day that had performed a a huge concert the night before…the lead singer (who also had a very successful solo career) and the other band members came the next day by limo to their aircraft. There were about 7 people on the tarmac that worked their and had brought things to be signed. They had attended the concert the night before. The ticket prices were high and these kids didn’t make a lot of money. The band all signed… the lead singer wouldn’t even acknowledge them…7 people NOT a crowd. Did I think he was just being real ..NO, I thought he was an ass and I still do

  28. soulaz, Who said Adam, the 2nd place finisher of season 8, should become more “Taylor-like”? Who said that, or even implied it? To each his own. Perhaps both feared for their safety or didn’t expect or want people’s OTT gift giving or praise or touching. E Gad the fame was new to both. AI is unique in the world of celebrity. Perhaps it isn’t a case of I voted for him or her, but just the popular and well done TV show and the attendes first chance of meeting a celeb, fresh off the press.

  29. I heard that Adam Lambert had a serious stalker that got arrested in Tampa. Don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s what I heard. I know Taylor has had some security issues in the past, so maybe Adam had other things to deal with…maybe it was much more than just being able to come outside to greet the fans. Just a thought.

  30. Grey, that is a good thought. There are nut cases. Women think Adam is cute, hot and sexy. A few are deranged and think they know him and have a connection. That was true with Taylor and I assume D. Cook. All of these guys are new to mass celeb and demanding fans. Stalkers and nut cases and even touchy feely greetings were not on their radar 8 months prior.

  31. First and foremost, good to see discussion back over here… I’ve been gone (ahhh, summer!) and I suspect it’s the same case for many others.

I went to one Season 5 AI show, so I don’t have much experience to go by, but while some of the Idols came out to sign and take photos, more did not. I didn’t see Kat, Kellie, Bucky, Elliott, Paris, Lisa, or Mandisa; nor, do I recall any of them making a statement apologizing for not coming out and signing. So, what’s an Idol to do?

It’s like Grey’s title “You Can’t Please All the People…”. Adam apologizes and catches shit for it. I guess it could be worse. Elliott’s mother was at that AI show I attended. That poor lady had her own encounter with fans who were angry about Elliott not coming out to see them, and they followed her urging her to call him, and get him to come out. Ace Young finally came out and took her inside the gates after assuring some over-zealous Rent-A-Cops that she was, indeed, Elliott’s mother.

Maybe next time, Adam won’t offer up any explanations, thereby avoiding at least some of the criticism.

  32. hicksaholic Says:

I also read that Adam was not allowed to sign autographs after several shows beacause of concerns about an armed stalker. Apparently when Adam has come out the mob goes berserk, much less so than when all the others come out. I am sure it is frightening. Also a number of people were leaving the concert during Kris’s set to get to the bus early for a possible Adam autograph.
I saw Taylor at his bus after the New Orleans HOB concert. It was my birthday and my daughters all came with me and we went to the bus afterwards. He looked absolutely miserable walking along that line. That is the last time I did that. I would love to be able to sit down over a beer with Taylor and talk about his career and thoughts on music, etc. but that ain’t going to happen. I do agree he is getting much better at the fan handling. I think at first it probably scared the crap out of him. Now he knows certain ones that follow him from city to city and pay for meet and greets in each one are harmless. Maybe Adam will get to that place. Right now for Adam the fan reactions are WAY OVER THE TOP. Plus you have the gay protesters showing up at the concerts too. Adam might should have worded his tweet with a security issue as a reason.

  33. hicksaholic Says:

Sorry much more so than when the others come out.

  34. casualfan Says:

cf….maybe Adam should have thought of that before he signed on the dotted line. He knew what he was getting into and accepted it gladly.

    ============================================
Anne-I don’t think any of these contestants really know the scope of what they are getting into until they are all ready in it. Taylor has even commented more than once that he was surprised and not prepared for the madness that ensued after his win. It was often reported that he looked like a “deer caught in a headlight” because of fan behavior and I witnessed that at The Roxy after his show over an incident.

These days, celebrities have to be cautious because the fan crop is different than what it use to be and sometimes violence becomes a serious concern.

To demand something as trivial as an autograph or some type of communication with these musicians is not realistic. Their interaction with their fans is suppose to be by choice and fun to do and not a “right”. When demands are made the fun is taken out of it and the choice is removed causing defenses to go up.

  35. I also wondered if security was part of the reason he didn’t come out but was advised not to say that because his fans get so emotionally distraught at the mention of his physical harm. Who knows? I agree his tweets could have been worded better or even no given at all. Poor Kris had a girl cram her tongue in his mouth during a picture. A few like that ruin it for the polite ones.

  36. Oh and while I’m babbling, I have seen SP bang on doors that security has told them to leave alone, yell through them and insist that whatever ridiculous homemade trincket she wants Taylor to have, of course he wants and can’t live without. It gets crazy.

Oh and Adam is most certainly not an ass, as was suggested above. By
all accounts I have heard and read, te little negative press he’s gotten has been proven to be lies spread by fans of another arist. He knows he has become a target and understands it’s part of being well known, albeit unfair and unfortunate.

  37. casualfan Says:

I think Adam is overwhelmed with things and is finding his way. His life has been turned upside down and readjustments are necessary for him to find that balance.

What he’s displaying is not arrogance but fear. I can totally understand that.

  38. I agree, Stangy…and I think you’re right. Stating in a tweet that security was the reason just lets the crazies win. And we also have to remember that this is the first openly gay contestant to be this popular. Even though we all claim to be openminded, it’s pretty clear not everybody is. Being gay is still considered a crime by some.

  39. Oh and Adam is most certainly not an ass, as was suggested above.
    ————————————————————-
Stangy…this is the problem with posting something…I did not say Adam was an ass…I really like Adam. If you had read my entire post you would have seen I was speaking of another artist that I personally encountered ,who in my opinion was insensitive to a few fans that had gathered to greet him. I said I thought he was an ass and I still do. Please read the post above.(Aug. 10..9:26 pm)

Anne, I think Stangy was referring to the above quote, not yours. 🙂

  41. mamaforpeace Says:

IAG, just what I thought when I read the post. Sorry, Anne, it was me! And Stangy, that is why I said IMO, b/c that’s all it is. I like and respect Adam, but to me he still comes off as a bit of an ass (there I said it again!), especially in the way he worded his tweets. It takes nothing away from his talent, and he may be a very nice person. It’s absolutely his right to refuse to sign autographs and I am sure sudden fame is very hard to deal with. But, come on, Adam of all people, having been in the business as long as he has, had to have some idea that this may be likely to happen. I wish him well, and I hope he finds a good balance between being a private person and a public figure.

  42. mamaforpeace…you expressed my thoughts exactly and much better then I could have. I take no execption to Adam refusing (although I think it is a little early in his career for that)to sign or come out to the fans< but I found his word a little harsh and he did come off sounding a little pomous IMO.

Sierra, I read the soulthing blog thats how I knew someithing was going on, did read some of that thread didn’t see how angry it turned. So sad folks can’t express themselves in support of Taylor on a Taylor Hicks fan board, wow! But others can be negative towards him and thats ok.

    JI

  49. All I know is that Griz has been a loyal fan from the beginning and now she’s banned. Just makes me sad.

  50. jerseyirish Says:

Sierra, I know Griz is a loyal fan, thats what makes this even more of a shame that she has been banned. I always go to her blog, they are well written and I enjoy her take on things. I seem to lean more towards the blogs then the boards just too much going on them to keep up.

    JI

  51. There are two sides to every story. I did not enjoy reading the posts of those who were attacking the moderators. The whole nonsense started over that damn Mr. Twitter contest. I’m new there but feel the 2 mods do a great job. I also know Griz is a huge Tay fan and posts a lot of info on the BB. Seems a few have a lot of pent up anger and some hateful words have been spoken the last few days. Best not to take sides in this as that will just mess up the BB. and cause more hurt feelings and anger.

  52. casualfan Says:

I do hope they start a reality showed called “Tweeps Gone Wild” and the first season can be about the SP.

This is quite entertaining! I especially love the Tweeps that include Taylor in their fanwar twitters tattling on each other.

    ***munches on popcorn***

  53. The whole “tattling” thing is completely ridiculous- as if Taylor has time to care about that. I don’t like Griz being banned but I also don’t like all the crticisim against the mods either, who I feel do a great job on the Boogie. I just wish they would all get along.

  54. jerseyirish Says:

Rosie, You go to the BB more than I do, have had little experience there, from what I read it just got out of control, which happens when tempers fly. I hope they reconsider and let Griz back in and put this behind them.

    JI

  55. casualfan Says:

I personally love it when they Tweet Taylor because it lowers their credibility even further (if that’s possible) and he sees who the real nutcases are. They are outting themselves-FABULAS!

  56. Why do I love that picture so very much??!!

  57. casualfan Says:

Woe to the people who ever thought the SP were a unity. Soul Patrol Land has been littered with honeycomb cliques since the American Idol forums and continues on today. The groups that do come together only do it because each one thinks the other has the inside skivvy on Hicks and wants to get close to him. Organization after organization has failed and will continue to fail because their motives are wrong.

I feel bad for Taylor for having to deal with all of this nonsense. He has bent over backwards countless times signing hordes of stuff time after time that ends up in shrines dedicated to him and has to see the same lame ass people who are obsessively obsessing over him, his whereabouts, his tweets, Mr. Twitter and who he has competed against on AI.

This has to break Taylor’s heart.

  58. Taylor could care less! He thinks we are a bunch of old bitties. Come on girls, think about it!

  59. I don’t read the Boogies regularly, I do go there for news updates and sometimes for photos and vids. I am sad, nonetheless, to see such a huge implosion. I’ve been there/done that in Taylorland, and it’s never pretty.
For those of you who are hurting tonight, take heart and know that this too shall pass, and guess what? Taylor will keep writing music, Taylor will keep recording, and Taylor will keep performing. I know that’s what matters most.
    Peace.

  60. Seems to me the few times Taylor has taken extended time off something explodes somewhere!! I chalk the whole thing up to a strange psychotic episode that occurs when the fans are having major Taylor withdrawls.
Just hope things can get patched up. Griz has always be a major sleuth in getting Taylor news.

  61. casualfan Says:

Dee-Griz doesn’t get anything exclusive. She trolls, stalks and roams the Net 24/7 looking for Taylor Hicks news. If she had any real credibility she would have gotten an interview with Taylor which I don’t believe has happened and will never happen, especially now that he’s aware of who she is-which she herself outed.

I have no respect for Griz and never have. People who try as hard as she has to bring in the news usually has an agenda. Now IT is playing pin the tail on the donkey with all the drama that she’s started. Nice move….

  62. I think Fairhope is probably right. Taylor couldn’t care less about that crap

  63. Casualfan, I did use the word sleuth not reporter. And yes she must have spent a lot of time looking for news. But I don’t see what is wrong with that?
To me it just seemed she was having fun trying to be first to find the Taylor breaking news of interviews, pictures, video etc. I didn’t look too closely at the blow up over there when fans start fussing I skip over it most of it.

  64. Where ever the SP gets involved there is disaster. This fan base is the worst and does not get any better. The majority thnks they own, know and sleep with Taylor. Taylor could care less . Think he’s a grateful person? Think again. Taylor does what Taylor wants. Hence his career…. He’s gone from hero to zero in less than 2 years. It’s a sad thing!

Hero to zero! Now, I think that’s a bit excessive! I don’t really see how he has been ungrateful. He is managing his career the way he sees fit, and whether we agree with his choices or not is really not up to his fans. I think in some ways he has tried too hard to please his fan base, but that’s just my opinion:) Anyway, though he was never a hero to me, he certainly is far from a zero now.
