Friends, foes and fandoms

taylor_hicks_5265103

For months now, I’ve been writing this blog. I’ve tried to run it in a fair and even minded manner. I want everybody to respect each other, and for the most part, things have been going well. Today, I came across this blog and was blown away but what she had to say about online communities.

On the other hand, I participate in some other non-technical online communities that are predominantly female and I have certainly witnessed nastiness in those. There is a pack mentality around the behavior where cliques of people “have your back” if you are their “friend”, often times even if criticism is warranted. There’s an apparent hierarchy involved where some people are “untouchable”. When the untouchables criticize another group member, the group doesn’t act against them. Rather, their comments are generally ignored or justifications are made. Granted, the reason that these people have exalted status in these communities is because they have a history for fair and even posts, with well thought-out criticisms, over a long period of time. OTOH, it’s disturbing to see one person (of lesser status) post something that is fair and justified and warranted, but directed at someone of “high status” and see her get blasted, while another person (of high status) posts nearly the same thing and it is ignored. Maybe this will make more sense in some pseudo code (taken from some typical behavior in a non-technical community in which I participate).

* A – person w/high status
* B – person w/high status
* C – person w/low or unknown status
* A criticizes actions of B (justified criticism)
* B ignores A’s comments
* C criticizes actions of B (same basic argument as A)
* B BLASTS C’s post, and many of B’s “friends” come to her defense, but no one says anything about A’s post.
* A realized the injustice and comes to the defense of C saying, “Hey, I said the same thing and you guys didn’t blast me. Leave C alone”

[unintended consequence: C may rise in the hierarchy because of apparent support by A].

OR

A ignores the injustice (or is oblivious to it) and C stays low on the totem pole, having been knocked down a notch.

How often have we seen this very behavior in the Hicksian Fandom? Just as I begin to believe that as we move forward, we will all come together to let one another “be a fan” in our own ways, something happens to make me realize there are those in this community whose grudges are bigger than Taylor’s talent.

Let’s say that we, too, have an “A” and a “B”. Imagine this scenario:

“A” does not like “B”. There are multiple reasons, but it really comes down to “A” having a certain standard of what a “fan” should be, how a “fan” should act and what a “fan” should write. “B” does not fall within these guidelines developed by “A”. “B” however, marches to the beat of her own drummer. She doesn’t care what “A’s” guidelines are. She is a fan of Taylor’s, but doesn’t think he invented music itself. In her world, Taylor can and does make mistakes, be it in the area of marketing or performing. She doesn’t believe that criticizing these aspects negates her “fan” status.

Then there are countless others out there who just hang in the middle, treading through the bullshit that pervades this fandom. These are the ones that get “tested”, so to speak, their loyalties and motives questioned by other fans. It’s all so ridiculous.

I’ve been in this fandom for three years now. For three years I’ve posted about Taylor Hicks, I’ve gone to concerts, I’ve made friends, and I’ve lost friends because of Taylor Hicks. I’ve been under the microscope of the Soul Patrol and I’ve also dished some grief out. Here’s the thing, though. In the three years of “learning the ropes of the fandom”, I like to think that I’ve grown a little from this experience.

For example, my eyes are open a little wider when it comes to music. I’ve been exposed to more artists via Taylor Hicks than I was previously, and that has afforded me some perspective on Taylor’s place in the music industry. I don’t profess to be a music geek, because there is so much that I don’t know. However, I’m pretty happy with the artists that I have heard.

I’ve discovered lots of things about myself, and the people that I surround myself with. I understand that friendships shouldn’t be based on my level of fangirliness, but should be based on real, substantial qualities, even in this virtual world that we all co-exist in.

As Taylor put it:

“Saw an old friend yesterday
Guess we both had too much to say
Seems we’ve taken different sides
All caught up in politics and pride”

All the backstabbing, name calling, second grade behavior that goes on in this fandom needs to be something we see in the distance, the distance way behind us.

  1. I’m scurrying in here to give you kudos, IAG. Excellent blog, and I agree with pretty much everything you’ve written. It’s my hope that someday we can all just be fans without the various labels attached, and have that be good enough.

    Scurrying back out ….

  2. Nice post couldn’t agree more. So many people forget what “ones opinion” means. It doesn’t mean that you have to agree with it, but it doesn’t make it wrong either.

Is it time for a big ole fandom group hug? Everyone embrace that we all are different?

  3. casualfan Says:

    Excellent blog IAG-as always.

  4. Lovin’ the group hug idea. I have always felt welcome here. Thanks IAG for being such an incredible host and letting people let loose with their opinions! It is so appreciated!!!

  5. casualfan Says:

Calling someone an idiot, psycho, liar and other colorful names shouldn’t have to be tolerated. That’s outright abuse and disrespectful to not only the poster that it’s being directed to, but to the other posters and to the blog owner. But then again, the poster(s) who engage in this behavior have no respect for themselves so they can have no concept of respect for others.

  6. jerseyirish Says:

Excellent blog, respecting ones opinion and that is all it is here or anywhere else just opinions not usually fact based. Wish folks could just get beyond past feelings and like Trixi said “a group fandom hug” and move on.

  7. I don’t get “fandom.” It’s like The Borg or something. I was never assimilated.

I’ve met people in the past three years whom I love a lot, independent of the existence of Taylor Hicks. We’ve shared a lot of experiences, laughs, and cares. We’re close. Them, I care about.

Other than that, everyone else is just someone on the internet sharing a long conversation about a subject of common interest. Some of it’s interesting to me and others, whereas those parts bore others to death. And the reverse is true, as well. It’s all equally legitimate.

Taylor Hicks fans are not related. We don’t share a cell, and we’re not going into business together. Why is it necessary that we get along. Why is it a matter of concern that we don’t? I don’t get it.

IAG, sounds like you deal with a real crapfest behind the scenes and that’s too bad. As far as I know, this is the only large gathering of TH fans free of enforced fawning at gunpoint. I hope you find a way to put the bullshit aside. Thank you for your efforts.

  8. casualfan Says:

JI-I respect what your saying but sometimes those feelings aren’t in the past as you put it. For example: Posting on a blog than going off to another blog-usually in the private chat rooms or the pw protected blogs and trashing the very posters one was posting with is not moving on. Some people don’t realize that chat’s and pw protected forum’s can copied and shared with others. If people are serious about “moving on” then perhaps not engaging in this type of behavior should be practiced by them also.

It’s not so much a matter of getting along. We can all have our own opinions. For example some of us think TH doing Grease is great, some of us, not so much. It’s a matter of respect. There are lots of people I disagree with, in real as well as virtual life, but I think everyone is entitled to respect. Which doesn’t mean that you can’t have a healthy and heated argument, just leave the name calling and the put downs at the door.
Thanks, IAG, you run a good place. When I started reading this post, I thought, “Oh, shit, another good one bites the dust!”. Glad you are staying around.

That’s ok JI and don’t feel alone in the “naivity” part. I was as green as the hills of TN when I first joined the SP-first and only fandom I ever belonged too. I inflicted wounds upon others myself and I don’t deny that fact. But it’s not what one comes to the table with that matters…it’s what one leaves with that counts-at least that’s my take on it. Problem is some are still sitting at the table with what they came with.

    ————–

Wow. This part hit home in a big way. I’ve observed and experienced pack mentality in this fandom, resulting in relationships ripped apart and relationships that endured. Stepping away from from the pack allowed me to enjoy Taylor more and to value the connections that remained.

Grey, you summed it up best when you said “it’s all so ridiculous”. Thanks for an eye-opening article.

  15. I know, I thought she was closing up shop, too. Glad you aren’t iag!

One of the coolest exchanges between Taylor’s fans happened here last week or so when we talked about homosexuality. (And what do ya know, the subject didn’t involve Taylor. ha!) Strong opinions were expressed on both sides, but we NEVER bashed one another and we’re all still friends, still sharing opinions on other topics. That speaks volumns about the people who come here to comment.

It’s a shame it can’t be that way at every blog. Why does it always become personal? Well, it doesn’t really matter to me anymore, I just don’t go to those places where people seem to enjoy hurting one another.

  16. jerseyirish Says:

cf, Thanks. you make some very good points. I know from what I have read and I read for a long time before I ever left a comment anywhere, things could get real testy, never wanted to be a part of that.

  17. casualfan Says:

Sometimes it takes stepping out of the box in order to see things more clearly. I know many of Taylor’s fans that have done just that and they now have a more refined respect his music. When I saw Taylor at The Roxy then again at a cd signing, I didn’t look at him as a Thud Muffin. I actually saw him as a musician.

  18. Stepping away from from the pack allowed me to enjoy Taylor more and to value the connections that remained.

Seven Days, you and IAG both hit the nail on the head. In terms of your post, “The Distance” can be a great thing, too!
Last week was so ironic and a bit emotional for me, seeing Mr. Hicks back on that AI stage. Lots of memories of faces I’ve loved, and literally lost, all b/c of this artist. Unbelievable as it seems, there are “friends” I’ve met in this fandom that I’ve loved who have actually turned their back on me due to “the Grease issue”.

This blog makes me feel sane again, and I appreciate all the work it takes, IAG, for you to host it for us.

  19. Snowstorm Says:

I could never understand why a fan wants to stick her nose into Taylor’s personal life – not of you fans are going to land him, so why should any of you care? The guy is a singer and entertainer – PERIOD! Spreading lies and rumors about someone you don’t know is terrible fan behavior and you will get called out for it. One upping each other, pretending you are an insider, when you are not, is also shitty fan behavior. Hidden agendas bother the hell out of me and I will call you out on it.

Other than that, I really could care less about the fandom. I don’t know any of you in real life and I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to share opinions about Taylor Hicks and his music and music in general.

  20. I don’t know any of you in real life and I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to share opinions about Taylor Hicks and his music and music in general.

Snow, you may be an acquired taste, but I do appreciate how you lay it all out in the open! 😉

  21. One of the coolest exchanges between Taylor’s fans happened here last week or so when we talked about homosexuality. (And what do ya know, the subject didn’t involve Taylor. ha!) Yes, Caryl…that was really cool. It’s moments like that that make it all worth it. 🙂

  22. I thought you were going to close the blog when I first started reading it! I’m glad I was wrong about that.

I just wanted to say that I sort of “landed here” because of some things I saw going on at that “other place” that I didn’t like. I hoped it was different here and yes I have found it to be so. Other than one day when I first started reading and posting here and saw some real nastiness, I have not seen that sort of behavior here for the most part. I like how we can all say what we want here. I know I get defensive sometimes. If/when I ever act like that, please call me down on it! Thanks for this place IAG.

  23. I tend to blather on at times, but I just want to say again how much I appreciate you IAG. I’m a random poster who has been lurking for over three years and only just found a comfortable place here this year with you. My musical tastes vary, but TH is one of my very favorites. I love that you allow us random people to come along and spout our opinions about what is good music with no repercussions. I have learned so much from this site and it’s posters. Please don’t be discouraged by any of this IAG!

  24. suze4158 Says:

Well, I really respect the intent of this post. I have witnessed and been subject to some very rancorous sides of the sp. I got banned from a site because I spoke out against the “gang” mentality that I just plain got sick of seeing. And it involved outing someone that I had been friends with.
I know the pain firsthand, and it ain’t pretty.
So, I tend to tread lightly wherever I go in TH-ville, most of the time.
I wonder why I continue to hang out, but I still have an interest in Taylor and the music and where it is all going.
I have appreciated this site, iag, and the fact that you allow a wide variety of opinions as long as they are expressed well and with respect.
A good rule of thumb for a blog or pretty much any part of life,
“Do to others what you’d have them do to you”.
Works….and makes you have to be more informed before writing, because you can’t just write about other people…you have to write about SOMETHING of substance. (which I rarely do, so I don’t get to post much..lol)

  25. Thanks for the kind words, guys…they are much appreciated.

  26. Raj, I have to bring to your attention, that we had almost identical posts one minute apart. Are you my West Coast doppleganger?

  27. spinshack Says:

You were inspired Grey! Great post. I’ve been pleased to have you all to converse with, debate with, share music with and sometimes just be nutty. Hope we carry on for a long while.

Recognized everything written in that article and it’s all true regarding real life working relationships and this fan base. Cheers.

  28. Quote True: “As far as I know, this is the only large gathering of TH fans free of enforced fawning at gunpoint.”

    Ha ha! Loved that! 😀

Um…with all due respect, snow, what’chu talking ’bout? In the spirit of this post, I ask that with love. *kisses* ~rainbows~ and one giant happy face. 🙂

  30. Sweetay Says:

Just dropped in to say I like this site and I am really liking Seven Mile Breakdown. I am not a forever fan, I am only a fan as long as I am entertained. Taylor surprised me with his AI performance and going country. I should have known that he hadn’t ran out of tricks. He’s pulled me back in.

But I cannot suffer through another blog about the fans. I did read up to the part where the labels were applied. A B and C and since I am somewhere in the X Y Z area of whose who in the Taylor zoo… I thought who am I to talk? I probably shouldn’t even be reading this stuff.

And NO I don’t want a hug, group or otherwise.

Snow: I agree with you a lot. Its eerie, like we’re sharing the same mind. I guess that makes us both half wits.

  31. SNOW said: “Other than that, I really could care less about the fandom. I don’t know any of you in real life and I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to share opinions about Taylor Hicks and his music and music in general.”

But if we make friends along the way, I see it as a bonus. 🙂

  32. Pipsmom Says:

I don’t post here often enough, but I very much enjoy reading everyone’s posts. I think this is a great blog and a good group of people.

I think my wariness to get involved daily comes from just that, IAG. I’ve been through it all with fandom and sites over the past three years. I too have been involved in sites where I’ve posted regularly, and I’ve gained and lost friends, as well.

But the friends I still have I will treasure forever, and for those friends alone, it has all been worth it.

Thank you for this blog, and forgive a gal for not being a regular. 🙂

  33. casualfan Says:

I agree raj…I have been blessed in making a few true friends in this journey with Taylor and my life has been enriched in many ways. He has inspired me to try things in my life which I never would have thought of doing and all have been successful (so far).

  34. Hey! Look who’s up late again! Zzzzz…what? I’m up, I’m up!!

    2) Really liked both of those videos a LOT and could see/would like to see TH sing either or both of those songs live or on another album!
    3) Sort of reminds me of Springsteen
    4) He takes advantage of his sex appeal

    Yes it is!

I have always liked John Cafferty.

  52. Susan Tedeschi’s sax player was amazing too. I think his name is Ron Holloway.

  53. Iag, I have a feeling that some who had refered to this as a hate blog have since changed their mind. It is a fun place to discuss Tay and music and keeps me from bothering my friends and family with Taylor talk. I even think there are two posters here who I had problems with and visa versus in the past when they used different names. Now we all get along and respect each others opinions. There was a 24 hr period early last Dec. when I thought about quiting posting due to some heavy handed attitudes I encountered. Glad I decided to stick around and was one of the early birds to find your blog.

  54. casualfan Says:

Glad you didn’t stop posting rosie. I don’t understand why some would think of this place as a hate blog but then again people tend to have severe tunnel vision when it comes to Taylor. I feel this blog is a good thing and much needed.

    ———————————-
LOL Did I not readily admit just a few posts up that it was one of my faults? Working on it! I saw “imagine this song on The Distance” as “it would have been so much better if……” and didn’t see any point in bemoaning the fact that it’s not on TD. But of course you have every right to wish it was. So once again I find myself apologizing & wondering if I should just keep my mouth shut. 😦

(I DO agree about the song though. I would love to see it or others like it on his next CD.)

Haven’t heard it in years (who has a tape deck anymore, anyways??)

  60. casualfan Says:

Whew, was afraid you were gonna shut down the blog. Great post. *Joins the group hug*

  67. This morning I read that it was a “Springsteen-esque fictional band” in the movie and was not surprised because I thought it sounded very similar to Springsteen when I first watched the video.

I need to go check at the the B. Yesterday, someone was fretting that if we didn’t vote in a certain poll that T’s career could be destroyed or something like that. I responded that we aren’t responsible for T’s career and should not try to take that upon ourselves (or some such thing – I don’t exactly remember) but now I’m wondering if there are repercussions. I mean, that might have been sacrilege. (WORRIED!)

  68. Phew, I have not been slammed, but even worse – ignored! I guess I’m just too low on the totem pole to be bothered with. Actually, there were other voices of reason in that thread saying it was not such a good idea to all go stampeding over to the music board and join just to vote in a poll. I’ll vote in an open poll, but this one is for members, and it makes things worse than actually helping IMO.

I did do the GAC Nights Fights, and actually enjoyed listening to their program for several hours for two nights, then went back the 3rd even when the TH fight was over. I found I do like some country music – the stuff that is similar sounding to SMB. I was listening to our local country station in the car this afternoon, and DO NOT like it. All very traditional sounding country. But I liked about 20-25% of what GAC played.

  69. casualfan Says:

I don’t vote on any polls. It’s been my experience that if the station managers or program directors like the music it will get played. Taylor has said himself that a good song will always find it’s way to the radio…maybe SMB is the one for him. (crosses fingers)

  70. I just read something disturbing on the BB. I registered there in Feb. but still haven’t posted and didn’t use rosie as that was already in play. One of the gals called her local country radio station to inquire if they had SMB. The DJ said it crossed his desk and he threw it in the trash because Tay isn’t a real country artist and he doesn’t like the guy. She engaged the DJ in polite convo and he later said perhaps he didn’t throw it away and would play it if it got in the top 30. He said his label wasn’t pushing him and he needed to be pushed. She said he is the label and he mentioned they are not doing the job of pushing him. Don’t know what (pushing) involves. Some other DJ said he might play it if it gets into the top 20. Now how in the heck will it get into the top 20 with no radio play? I’ve tried to listen off and on the the top monitered radio station in Balto, the last two days and can’t stand it. It is Garth Brooks, Chesney and Carrie stuff and some older stuff, but none of it sounds like SMB. The station in the western part of MD. is all about 4 wheel pickups parked in the yard, and white trash proud hillbillies and SMB would fit even less there. Taylor continues his uphill climb. Well at least my Target had a few copies of TD today. I know we can’t help Taylor to be successful by voting in polls, etc. and we shouldn’t have to. But damn SMB deserves to be heard.

SMB did not get any adds this week. Hope the video will help. Going country may not be as easy as first thought. There seems to be some resistance or maybe just a little wait and see.

  72. I had a dream last night that Taylor signed on to do an opera. Well, now, don’t go crazy. He had no JUICE.

  73. casualfan Says:

It’s my opinion only of course, but if Taylor had such a wonderful response from AI as people are suggesting then SMB should have no problem getting into the top 20 and radio play.

Independent labels are harder to push then major labels because of the obvious reason: money=marketing. That is unless the Artist is already established in the industry

  74. jerseyirish Says:

cf, That was a great viedeo, the guitar playing was fantastic especially in the begining!!! 🙂

Usually don’t vote in too many polls, once in awhile. From what I have heard the radio stations don’t always take to kindly to the polls so I don’t join in.

Rosie, Thats kind of scary that SMB is not being pushed, how can it get to the top 20 or 30 without air play. Wow something isn’t right. He did an interivew today on a Country station, they seemed thrilled with SMB and the CD in general.

    JI

  75. I know he has been doing tons of country station interviews and they all seem very open and friendly to him. But who knows what goes on behind the scenes? If SMB isn’t country, what is it? I guess like most of T’s music, it’s hard to fit it in anywhere on the radio. (sigh) But if you saw my post above, I did hear similar type songs on GAC Nights. I think some have mentioned Rascal Flats as the same type of country? I don’t know I have not listened to them, and when I listened to GAC they did not have a stream going telling me WHO I was listening to. I did like some of it and that means it’s not ALL hillbilly, twangy stuff. I think that’s the only kind of music SOME stations play. That’s all I heard in my car today on our local station. I don’t like it and I can def say SMB would not fit in there.

Maybe he needs to start his own Modern Whomp Radio. 😀

  76. ROSIE SAID: “He said his label wasn’t pushing him and he needed to be pushed. She said he is the label and he mentioned they are not doing the job of pushing him. Don’t know what (pushing) involves.”
    ——————————————————–
HOW do they push a song??? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  77. casualfan Says:

rosie, fans push a song by calling the dj and requesting.

  78. But how does the LABEL push the song?

  79. I was one that got excited when I heard the Dj’s on the KC station talking to Taylor. The DJ’s loved him, loved the song. But as usual it’s not the Dj’s that do the programming. Radio is a wicked, wicked business.

Many of Taylors songs would fit into country, now he just needs the break!!

  80. soulaz Says:

You know, I’ve been around since the beginning . . . joined my first of many Taylor boards in Feb 2006. It was a roller coaster ride from the very beginning and I learned very quickly that it’s best to just be yourself and let others do the same. Still, I butted heads with people many times, and have been banned from more boards than I like to think about. I have been an asshole a time or two, definitely.

When I look back over the past three years, it would be really easy to point my finger at all the people who have behaved poorly, or not to my liking at least and place myself on a pedestal . . . but that would be a bit ridiculous, since I had many moments when my own behavior was pretty juvenile.

I know of at least two people who post on this blog that I got into a stupid fight with on the AI boards . . . and they were right and I was wrong.

My point is this, I guess . . . I look back at it all without regret, but at the same time, great thankfulness that I am in a much more normal place as far as my “relationship” with Taylor Hicks and his fans.

  81. casualfan Says:

Lots of peeps got sent to ban camp on AI and more than once. One (or two) that no one would have ever suspected roasted marshmellows along with us “common folk” once or twice.

  82. soulaz Says:

I got banned on the AI boards many times, CF . . . but not for fighting and stuff like that. Mainly for being “colorful” to put it tastefully. I also had many pseudonyms there with which to play.

Someone had made a list of “trolls” that should be despised and posted it on the boards and I think I had three names on the list. People would have been surprised to know that, back then. 😛

  83. I’m content that I have only a 9 month history posting given all the crap that some went thru. During those 9 months I know some have changed names and that is fine with me. I find it kind of appealing that there are people from 16 to 82 with different opinions about Taylor and 90% of them I have no ideal what they look like. It is fun to get glimpses of their personality from what and how they write. I only become motivated to debate/argue/disagree when someone says Tay has no balls. I stand up for his balls of brass everytime. Everything else I just take as someones opinion or wants.

  84. casualfan Says:

Who ever created the list of “trolls” is no doubt the biggest troll of all. Anyone who spends the time and energy to create a hit list and then spread it all over the Net pretty much speaks for itself…don’t ya think?
    :p

  85. CF, several fans have called or emailed to request SMB as they did with WRIR and were told it needs to be top 20 or 30. The DJ I mentioned above spoke about the label needs to push the song. That sounds like payola or else a hell of a lot of arm twisting by a major label. Elliott also is not getting play, although he did with his first CD.

  86. casualfan Says:

If the DJ’s are telling the fans that then it’s up to the public to buy his music in order for it to get into the top 20. Everyone was all excited about him singing on AI and convinced that would push up his CD sales. Has that happend? I haven’t seen any numbers so I don’t know.

I have no doubt that “arrangements” are made by the major labels and radio stations but I am not touching that payola mess.

Tonight Idol is going to be great. Slash is mentoring and Daughtry is on tomorrow night. Interesting indeed.

  87. Christa Says:

I’ve heard many stations haven’t received the song yet. We’ll just have to wait and see. 🙂

    Taylor tweeted.
    “finally twittering..happy 5th of may..haha”

Cinco de Mayo you mean? He’s so white lol. XD

  88. Christa Says:

About Idol… Danny is definitely in trouble. 😦

  89. I was so excited at the beginning to hear that Adam was doing Zeppelin!!! Was all ready and expecting to get back on his bandwagon. Then, what a let down for me. I thought it was bad. It was like an Elvis impersonator doing Robert Plant. (Ducking) Judges certainly pushed him tonight. Still into Allison and Kris the most. Developed a soft spot for Danny after last week (he did good!) Tonight he started off rough but I thought ended it well. He can sing well sometimes but he’s not like Taylor with his personality, dancing, or delivery. Don’t see how anyone compares the two. He’s just himself, and I like him.

  90. Someone in Radio on another board swears Payola is a thing of the past and says Taylor is doing everything he can do. She says pushing a record means doing interviews, giving stuff to pass out to listeners like free tickets or CD’S. It is just much harder for independents to get radio play. Plus things have tightened up in radio. Elliott said just recently that being out this time trying to get radio play is alot harder than a few years ago. It pains me to say but Taylor may have to pay even more dues before he completely breaks through. Maybe he could tour with a Country singer like Kelly did to break in. He is doing good for an independent though so maybe we just have too high expectations.

  91. Loved Danny last week but this week bad thought Kris did the best he could. Danny does have a strong fan base so you never know and I think Matts votes will go to Kris or Danny. Guess Adam will be a rock star and I can’t begin to imagine his concerts. Costumes anyone, Elvis jump suits, low cut Jerry Seinfeld puffy shirts, pasties and shorts, oh the possabilities!

  92. Soulaz:

Whee! That’s the best thing I’ve read in a long time. Really had a good laugh.

Do you remember who you were Soulaz? I had 3 idents (TrueNorth, Truenort, and Harphound), but they came about only because I needed a new one to use while I was banned. I did say it was me each time, tho.

Then I had one I used when I wanted to use my chopped “Taylor smoking” avi. That was the only slightly trolly ident I ever had, and I only used it a few times – just to poke the puritans. [<—game show idea?]

  93. Nice job, IAG. I read your post this morning, with only about a dozen comments at the time, and have thought about it several times through the day — but with no time to do a comment justice. And now my brain may be too tired to actually sort through it all, but I hate to end the night without at least adding my props for your place and your effort to keep things real.

Simply put, I enjoy posting here because I feel a degree of freedom to say what I think — and reasonable confidence that my comments will be treated with respect — that I haven’t experienced on a public board since the early days at GC.

There are so many other things I could say, but I think I’ll leave it at that.

    And that photo is lovely.

  94. casualfan Says:

    ===================================
I thought he had the chance to tour with Kenny Chesney or whatever his name is but turned it down.

Daughtry made a wise move by touring with Bon Jovi and did extremely well. He may have been the opening band but it gave him exposure to millions of people and they all had the chance to listen to HIS music. Touring with a headliner may not garner one big bucks, but the pay off means so much more in the long run.

Regarding payola…that is old news but some people won’t let it die. If Taylor was raking in the exposure and the fame those people wouldn’t be bitching about any payola scam.

  95. casualfan Says:

Harphound=LOL! I remember the rumor of some thinking that was Taylor…ROFLMAO!

  96. CF, I agree that touring with a headliner has much to recommend it.

  97. littlewing Says:

I feel this blog is a good thing and much needed.

Haven’t read all the comments but just wanted to chime in and say I agree with this and even tho I don’t comment a lot, I appreciate the thoughtful posts and diversity of opinion presented here.

  98. I thought he had the chance to tour with Kenny Chesney or whatever his name is but turned it down.

CF, if that is true… Could he possibly be THAT suicidal?? omg.
That just lends a hell of a lot more weight to this idea that the music has become secondary to an acting career for Mr. Hicks.

Chesney is HUGE in country. My god. I’m truly dumbfounded.
    Speechless. *shakes head*

  99. casualfan Says:

YKW-I agree. I think he was asked not long after his Idol win around the time Daughtry was making plans to tour with Jovi. In fairness to Taylor, I doubt that anything but his music was on his mind at the time. Taylor has always danced to the beat of his own set of drums-as we all know.

On another note…I totally missed AI today because I got the times mixed up and I’m bummed. Who screwed up and who is going home? Anybody with an opinion?

  100. Okay, so, in all fairness… if this offer to open for Chesney was that long ago, I’m not sure I would still classify it as “career suicide”. Although, hindsight being 20/20, I cannot see where it would have HURT his exposure to the world of MUSIC lovers (as opposed to the TV viewing audience that watch/vote for AI).

And if it was his music that was on his mind, why would he NOT do everything in his power to get it out there?!?! *sigh*
I’m arguing myself out of my own argument. Ugh.

  101. From what I heard the Daughtry solo shows at small venues weren’t selling out. So it made sense for him to hook up with BJ. At that same time almost all of Taylors were selling out. It still boggles me that Daughtry has sold so many cds. I guess radio play helps.

I don’t care for Daughtry music, cuz like it’s been said so many times, it sounds like everything else on the radio. Also the reason I don’t listen to the radio much!!

  102. Quoting Raj:
But how does the LABEL push the song?
    ======================
Back in the 60s & 70s, the label would give the album to the DJ with some cocaine in it! LOL……..payola.
What a real bust up when THAT hit the news!

  103. Editorial Reviews == Eddie and The Cruisers.
    Amazon.com
This modest early ’80s hit film about a fictional ’60s rock icon who mysteriously disappears (or does he?) took its lead from similar legends surrounding the death of Jim Morrison. Its succesful soundtrack arose from an even more surreal brew of art and commerce. Then-journeyman musician John Cafferty and his Beaver Brown Band essentially became the, er, “real” Eddie and the Cruisers, with actor Michael Pare lip-synching the vocals, and other actors miming their parts. Cafferty and crew supply what was then a fair approximation of the Springsteen Sensibility–wall-of-sound bar rock with overreaching lyrics and grab-your-throat vocals. Not half-bad–if you like that sort of thing. –Jerry McCulley
    ========
Now the sequal movie, Eddie Lives, was OK, but didn’t thrill me like the original.
As for Idol, what a hard call……….totally blown away by A Whole Lotta Adam………and his duet with Allison was awesome. (I swear I use the word awesome more than my tween does!) Kris was good too, sounded like Daughtry’s shy little brother LOL……and Kris’ duet with Danny was good too. Danny thought Danny was much better that Danny really was. (I like Danny but rock is NOT his forte!)

  104. I like Daughtry’s voice and a few songs on his CD. But many of them sound like the others and the lyrics are one cliche after the next. I’m curious to see what his new album is like.

  105. MN Sue Says:

Regarding the rumored Chesney pairing, I seem to recall Taylor playing “Country Fest” in Wisconsin back in ’07(?). To say he was poorly received is putting it mildly. It wasn’t a fit for his career back then…or now.

  106. Off topic:
……Adam & Allison’s duet has had over 14 thousand views on youtube already! in only 13 hours, no less!

  107. I’ll tell you what. I’m not a big fan of rock, but that duet was unbelievable. I loved it!!

Regarding the rumored Chesney pairing, I seem to recall Taylor playing “Country Fest” in Wisconsin back in ‘07(?). To say he was poorly received is putting it mildly. It wasn’t a fit for his career back then…or now.

So, you don’t think SMB is going to get him anywhere in the country market?

  109. MN Sue Says:

IGA: Nope. I love the song, but nope. It might, if he’s lucky, make just about as much impact as WRIR on AC. SMB is a much better song. The problem is SMB does not come from a purely country CD. Songs were included that could be interpreted as country, if you turned your ear sideways. And the one song that screams country is a major suckfest (WDB). But, I think the acceptance of SMB on country radio will be hurt by association. If Taylor had chosen a strict country format he might have had a better shot of radio play.
That being said, I’m glad he didn’t.

  110. Nineteen is pretty country………..it’s a remake, tho, isn’t it?
I’m just finally able to listen to it with a dry eye! IAOK is another tear-jerker……..too long for radio play, plus it’s a “bonus” song.

  111. I guess I was just hoping for too much out of this CD.

  112. MN Sue Says:

I was only hoping for a CD that I would personally love to listen to so I was not disappointed. It took me awhile to get over the fact that, although there is a prevailing theme, it genre jumps its way out of mass acceptance.
Is a CD judged by it’s worst song or it’s best? If it is the latter, then why the hell wasn’t IAOK included and WDB was? Major f**k up!

  113. Yeah, add that to the list of things that I don’t understand about Taylor and his career. Ugh.

It’s like he’s trying all the genres out, seeing which one the public “accepts” him at. Problem is, I don’t think he’ll be accepted until he decides who in the hell he is.

And I totally agree about IAoK. Best song, by far. Why was it only included as a bonus? I just don’t get it. And I know, I don’t need to get it. But damn, if I don’t get it, as a fan of his, how are people going to get it that hear him on AC radio, then country?

  114. spinshack Says:

So anyone find the link for the new video? I’ve been over to AOL and not seeing it.

  115. Taylor has proven he respects many types of music. He said in the behind the scenes video of WRIR he had to get back to where he was before Idol, musically speaking. He has also stated his goal was to get radio play. If this was his personal mission statement I think this cd is a step in the right direction. Personally I’d like to see Taylor pick a lane. However, you can’t fault the guy for busting his buns to get radio play.

  116. Snowstorm Says:

I told you this a long time ago…a cd with different genres doesn’t work. Trying to please everybody doesn’t work. It’s obvious he’s still doing the AC crap to please the older women…because that’s all he’s got left. And he got fooled into thinking the older women have disposable cash to spend on him. His merry band of old women…not enough of them to support his career. He’s made some very bad decisions regarding his music.

I also think 7 Mile will have a difficult time getting airplay, even though it is a great song. Promotion means spending $$$$$$.

  117. Snowstorm Says:

I was wondering about the video, too. Where is it?

  118. I don’t know where it is, but I can’t find it.

Is this another one of those times when Taylor says but doesn’t do?

  119. If it’s any consolation, I hear Taylor everyday on my car radio.. LOL
Via bluetooth from the mp3s on my telephone.
I kind of bought a new radio with a car around it!
It’s still early days for this CD. I don’t mind the different genres in the CD, it reminds me of the Fine Young Canibals first CD, there was a different genre for each tune, it seemed (wayyyyy back in the day)

  120. spinshack Says:

Oh shhhh. Grey. Hey did you find Gray Charles yet on twitter? Catch up with y’all later, time to go to do what I do out There.

  121. Nope. Didn’t find Gray.

  122. spinshack Says:

Click my profile his link is on there on a return msg. Hit that you get him. He’s playing ‘find me’. lol

Hopefully by the time I get home we’ll know if T was pulling our legs or not. Bye.

  123. jerseyirish Says:

I’ve looked at aol and a couple other places that the might be played, nothing. Isn’t it the guy who makes/films the video the one that releases it? I’ll keep checking about hopefully it will turn up soon.

  124. MN Sue, good to see you!

You wrote: “I seem to recall Taylor playing ‘Country Fest’ in Wisconsin back in ‘07(?). To say he was poorly received is putting it mildly.”

Oh boy, that’s not good. But, of course, that was then. He wasn’t singing anything that sounded like country in ’07, was he? But I’m still concerned that he’ll be percieved as a wanna-be in country music.

Not overly concerned, mind you. I’ve got my own problems. LOL! (Couldn’t help adding a small disclaimer lest I be accused of expressing ‘angst.’ Sick of that word.)

  125. its all grey wrote: ‘Nope. Didn’t find Gray.’

Did you want to? Just a joke, Gray (as in Charles)

    Hey, btw:
‘Grey’ (with an ‘E’) refers to itsallgrey.
‘Gray’ (with an ‘A’) refers to Gray Charles.
    In my world, anyway.

I’ll send you a link to Gray in an e-mail, Grey. Don’t want to post it here cuz it ain’t my place.

  126. Caryl, I love it when you bring the angst!

  127. *groan* you said the ‘A’ word.

    🙂

  128. charcoal Says:

Whoo, the video is out! And he’s got the “Soul Patrol” guitar strap in full force . . . YES!!!!

    or, wait, should I cheer?

  129. Snow, I don’t believe Taylor did the multi-genre to try to please everyone. I think he did it to please himself. Having just read HFOS this week, I can say that TD is exactly the kind of album he said he would like to make. He doesn’t care about fitting a certain label. That’s what “Modern Whomp” is all about. He chooses songs that speak to him and he thinks will speak to others. He said you do have to take consider the commercial aspects also, but the music is more important than selling millions of cds. He want’s more than anything to share music and entertain with it.

I liked how when talked about the Idol Tour he said how much more he liked the small theaters and club venues than the areas. He likes to connect with the audience. He’s having a hard time connecting on radio, that’s for sure.

I don’t know if country radio or country fans will embrace SMB or not. Those who like pop country, or more rocky country should if they are open minded. It’s a great song. It bothers me that some country fans will think he’s just trying to use country radio. He’s been singing this song for a long time, he didn’t just come up with it to try to make it in country radio. I hope they realize he’s not trying to pass himself off as a country artist. He’s put out some country “some” country songs on his CD, along with other types, because he wanted those them heard. That is a double edged sword. To go all country would be against what he’s all about, but by not doing it the country folks might get the wrong idea. They don’t understand his “Modern Whomp” philosophy.

  130. Wow, that post is just FULL of errors. Sorry!

  135. I put up a new post for reaction to the video.

  136. Snow, I said nothing about MW being a success or failure, did I? I said TD is what he described MW to be – multi-genre.

  137. Unfortunately, THIS is how alot of people view Taylor, not as a kick ass soul man but like this (and I for one get totally embarrassed when he is like this)

  138. Actually, when he blows the lyrics to Dancing In the Dark, does he drop the f-bomb?????
I’m sick of sitting here F**ing with myself?

  139. at 4:28 he totally drops the F-bomb……….right in front of everybody!!
