I get by with a little help from my friends…

x3sswn-1

Scouring the internet the other day, I ran across this really interesting presentation of sorts. It’s directed towards musicians and explains the phenomena of the online fandom. Nancy Baym is the genius behind this. I want to make sure to give her props and also highlight some points.

There are five main reasons that the internet made fans so
powerful. The internet:
Transcends distance and increases reach
Provides group infrastructures
Supports archiving
Enables new forms of engagement
Lessens social distance

The internet has basically changed the fans’ experiences. It allows fans to come together, create groups and discuss and analyze the music on a broader horizon than ever before. Never mind that it also allows fans to discuss other fans, too. Now, the fans expect more than the occasional Soul Patrol shoutout. They want some real interaction.

This next part is pretty interesting. She basically tells the musicians that you need to work with the fans regarding the music and accessibility. Musicians may want the bootlegging to stop *coughTaylorcough*, but it’s been done for years now. I just don’t see it stopping anytime soon. Also, the fans are going to hold you to your word. If you say this is going to happen, then they are actually going to expect said thing to happen.

Of course, the flip side to fans’ empowerment is what seems a lot like
disempowerment to those who’ve been able to control music
production, distribution and coverage. It’s natural to respond to this
with fear. The threats are real. Those in industry may want to stop
fans from:
Criticizing them, spreading their music, using their name,
bootlegging their shows, discussing their private lives, writing
fantasies about them, spreading misinformation
But getting control back is not an option. That genie is not going
back in the bottle. The power struggle and the tensions it raises will
continue for the foreseeable future.
The relationship between fans and artists is less and less like a
business relationship in which artists and industry set the terms and
audiences either buy or don’t, and more and more like a social
relationship in which bands and fans have to negotiate terms
together.
They are independent, they have their own goals, and they will do
things you don’t like. They can also help you.

I swear, I want to enlarge this next section and post it at every Taylor Hicks site, just on the off hand chance that somebody Taylor knows (and isn’t a yes man) might see it and tell him. You can have various sites, but make sure they all point back to the main one. And all new information should be released on the main site. In other words, don’t let some random fan scour the net and find out you’re doing Grease for the rest of the year. Release that information at taylorhicks.com and let it spread from there.

Have a well-defined online presence that is distributed across
different sites, but that is well-integrated and consistent. Make
sure that your own homepage is the core, that all of your other
sites point people back to it, and that it points outward to all the
other places you’re building an active presence.

Warning: only communicate with your fans in as many ways as
you can manage to maintain regularly over the long haul. Don’t
be overly ambitious. Dead blogs and empty twitter accounts are
worse than none at all.

In this internet age, communication is easily accessible and information can be sent from one part of the world to another in seconds. It only takes a few minutes to make a blog, or hell..Taylor could have Bill video him saying something. It’s really not that hard. I think Taylor needs to decide what his main site is and actually start releasing information. He may be a throwback singer, but he’s going to have to get with the times on this if he wants his fanbase to stop decreasing and start increasing.

I agree with a lot of what you’ve said. This fandom is a huge big mess isn’t it?

  2. “You can have various sites, but make sure they all point back to the main one. And all new information should be released on the main site. I could not agree more wholeheartedly. There’s Taylorhicks.com and TaylorhicksHQ . . . I’m getting e-mails telling me that my membership at HQ is expiring and how to retain my membership. What for? It’s not like I can get scoops there. And everyone knows that sites like RightHicksSave are the place to go if you want good photos.

Everyone knows that a majority of musicians successfully use their dot com sites, MySpace and Facebook to keep their fans up to date and involved. I for one would love to see more online presence from Taylor.

  3. Virtual Speak Says:

    Amen to this.

Taylor has yet to realize that he’s a small business onto himself. Without a business plan he will fail. He’s faltering now with his lack of online presence. Myspace isn’t exactly the best avenue to get your information out there. Either is hearing about his on again-off again media policy from the brother of his best friend.

Right now, he has “people” that do things for him. Granted, the “people” he has now are representing him better than the last bunch. But, it’s still not enough.

He has to be his own advocate and stop relying on fans that try to one-up one another for the latest scoop. His voice, his persona, his music are his commodity. If he can’t take a few minutes out of his week to blog or vlog on one of his sites- it sends the message that he isn’t interested.

In light of the latest news of his signing with Grease for the remainder of the year- and no media at his shadow tours-his online presence should be of the upmost importance to him, to keep fans interested.

Most people I talk too are losing hope daily.

He needs a lesson from Oprah. Never get to big to stop signing your own checks and always watch what’s coming in one door and out the back.

  4. Yes, this is a fascinating topic; I just wrote about aspects of this topic last week if anyone is interested — the more disussion the merrier (or something like that).
    http://writingdoc2.wordpress.com/2009/01/18/the-internet-and-fandom-putting-the-%e2%80%9cism%e2%80%9d-in-fanaticism/

I’ve noticed a trend in artists lately hiring “media managers” to essentially manage and maintain their online presence — to keep a pulse on what’s going on in various fan communities and respond in a timely/efficient fashion. With emerging artists, this is especially important. I have no idea if Taylor has anyone officially in his management camp doing this…or doing it well.

  5. Taylor has yet to realize that he’s a small business onto himself. Without a business plan he will fail. He’s faltering now with his lack of online presence. Myspace isn’t exactly the best avenue to get your information out there. Either is hearing about his on again-off again media policy from the brother of his best friend.

Exactly. He needs to stop thinking with a bar singer mentality regarding marketing and start thinking like someone who can actually make money from singing.

  6. Taylor told us in interviews that he was signed through 2009 for Grease, and he also told fans that he would be in Birmingham, Atlanta, FL, etc. I do agree that he needs to have “one” general site, but the recent Grease news isn’t new news!

  7. I stopped fansites a long time ago. I don’t like any of them. I am a member of HQ and I believe that expires in a few months and, no way will I be renewing. Taylor seems to prefer his myspace for communication, so whatever, I guess. I’m only interested in news about him anyway.

There is a lot Taylor can do to keep his fans interested, but it’s obvious he just does not care and I’m not Taylor’s mommy, so if doesn’t care, then why should I?

  8. Greeneyes, it’s probably new news to people who don’t believe that what every Taylor fan says about Taylor is true.

  9. Virtual Speak Says:

Greeneyes.. The news really wasn’t new, you’re right.

But, I don’t belong to the site where the brother of the best friend seems to have all the latest and greatest scoop- so therefore- until Taylor says it-it’s hearsay.

He just recently let it slip very nonchalant when asked how long he was with the roadshow and he said “One year.”

  10. Wow! I just read the entire presentation. I am definitely going to go back and read it again, much more deliberately. I also have read more of writingdoc2’s blog, which has been fascinating me so far.

writingdoc2, I haven’t commented yet, but I plan to. Kudos on the blog, seriously.

VS, you are so very correct in your comment. Taylor Hicks, the small business, is faltering and has no plan that we can see to correct course. The flow of information from Taylor to the fans is either sporadic, inaccurate or non-existent. Because of this, an army of unpaid super sleuths has been created, who scour the internet for news and updates to post on their “home board.” The other fans are then obligated to search the different sites to locate the information, and it is distributed from there. This is not a business plan, it is a grapevine.

I couldn’t agree more with you, soulaz and pipsmom. Mr. Hick’s sense of business management in this regard is embarassing. His public voice is completely amateur-ish. Mr. Hicks, himself, could do MUCH to unite his fanbase by being clear and forthcoming with information, negating the “unpaid army of super sleuths” … Those fans who, in effect, trump one another with information and therefore, one upmanship.

The truly maddening thing, though, is the fact that Mr. Hick’s seems to recognize this by his recent comments regarding “information being currency”. He recognizes how important information is to his fans, yet leaves it up to his fans themselves to mine what little buzz they can.

  12. I don’t belong to the site where the brother of the best friend seems to have all the latest and greatest scoop.

And this is EXACTLY what I’m referring to re: one upmanship and the splintered aspect of this fanbase.

  13. Seven Days Says:

Fascinating topic. While I agree with you about needing to create a more well defined online presence (in the words of the article), that wasn’t the part of the article that reached out and grabbed me.

    But this was….

“…..The relationship between fans and artists is less and less like a
business relationship in which artists and industry set the terms and
audiences either buy or don’t, and more and more like a social
relationship in which bands and fans have to negotiate terms
    together…..”

Fascinating concept. That model of a social relationship between artist and fan has the potential to be either helpful and collaborative or a slippery slope to disaster. In Taylor’s case, I fear (based on what I’ve seen so far with fans competing for attention) that it would be the latter.

  14. RedRoseSpeedway Says:

“There is a lot Taylor can do to keep his fans interested, but it’s obvious he just does not care and I’m not Taylor’s mommy, so if doesn’t care, then why should I?”

this is how I’m beginning to feel too

  15. The problem is there isn’t a whole lot of news about him anyway. You do realize how far he’s fallen off he rader, don’t you? Taylor has a very small fanbase.

  16. Good discussion — I agree with the “small business” analogy, soulaz, and YKW, it is true that there is a disconnect often between Taylor’s recognition of the importance of his online fan base and the way information is ultimately discovered, presented, and disseminated.

Interestingly, I was a part of another Idol contestant’s fanbase for a long while and it was exactly the same thing: official website that had few updates; a MySpace presence that wasn’t used to its potential; and discoveries of any breaking news or upcoming appearances found through grassroots efforts by fans. And, the fans were definitely more up in arms about this inefficiency than the artist himself.

  17. I can’t type today. This should read….

You do realize how far he’s fallen off the radar, don’t you?

  18. Virtual Speak Says:

    Seven Days says:

That model of a social relationship between artist and fan has the potential to be either helpful and collaborative or a slippery slope to disaster. In Taylor’s case, I fear (based on what I’ve seen so far with fans competing for attention) that it would be the latter.

You’re so correct. But, the fault lies with Taylor for <b<allowing his fans to take over. A good example is: Allowing a fan to hold the capacity of a moderator on his “official” site. The same fan that breaks news and recaps of his video shoot on her own site, yet won’t share on any other. Isn’t that a conflict of interest?

The reason I place the blame on Taylor is because this is his career and he needs to be steering the ship. When the ship goes down, he’ll sink with it. The unpaid super sleuths (as Soulaz said.. lol) will grab a life raft and swim onto their next conquest.

Which brings more questions.. does he even care? Does he not realize these things? Is it laziness or ignorance?

WD2- I meant to tell you that I am enjoying your blog as well. I will be commenting there too! 🙂

  19. Taylor might be correct in his statement that “information is currency” but I wonder if he’s using his currency effectively. He might believe that by withholding information, the value of his currency is increased, but the exact opposite seems to be true.

When you add into the mix, sites that have the brother of the friend, or the friend of the brother, or the cousin of the whatever, the power of the currency is placed in the wrong hands. Not only do those sites get the “scoop” but too often times, they hold the scoop close to their vests and only share the information with those who are worthy. The unworthy get a *wink wink* and a cryptic message designed to elevate the placement of the worthy in the hierarchy of fandom.

When and if Taylor decides to use his own currency effectively and efficiently, then the power of the “wink winkers” will be diminished, and the value of his currency will increase.

  20. Ahhh, Soulaz!!! Bravo!!!!
    *applauds wildly*

  21. Virtual Speak Says:

    Marry me Soulaz.

The *winky winkers* can kiss my *ass* because if they think for one reason that Taylor’s currency is all they have.. they’re very poor, poor people.

Nothing is secret or sacred in the fandom world.

  22. Thanks, hee hee . . . just an observation from my viewpoint as one of the perpetually, and by my own design, unworthy fans.

  23. It’s a puzzle because I think communicating via the internet is so flippin easy. He doesn’t even have to type anything, just dictate something (anything!) to good old Bill, post it at HQ first and then in a few days post it at his other sites. Simple.

  24. itsallgrey wrote: “Also, the fans are going to hold you to your word. If you say this is going to happen, then they are actually going to expect said thing to happen.”

Yes! I have a mental list of things we were promised that never materialized. It’s disappointing to say the least.

  25. The other issue with second-hand information from fans, “insiders,” or whomever (and not from official management or the artist directly) is that this “information” is often taken and presented out of context OR ends up being expounded as the gospel truth….when in fact the information passed along could just be an off-hand remark or observation — not the direct wishes of the artist himself.

  26. Good point, writingdoc.

Another comment I have is does Taylor think he is that well off that he doesn’t need to advertise these gigs? Does he think he’s that far up on the pedestal that his fans will come no matter what? And who put him up there? Did he crawl up there himself, or did the fanbase do it by not always being real about him?

  27. jerseyirish Says:

I agree with everyone, he really needs to get the information out from his camp, not fans finding out from google alerts and other fans from speaking with him, just isn’t good.

    JI

  28. Taylor Stupid. That’s my final answer.

  29. HAHAHAHAHHA Blue!!

The problem is that Taylor puts fans in a bad position when he tells them something and then tells them to “get the word out.” It’s just unprofessional.

  30. casualfan Says:

on the other hand IAG-the fan he says that to should tell him to take care of his own business. That is very unprofessional and I can’t help but wonder if he does that because he knows it will keep the pot stirred in the fandom. He’s lurked around long enough on these boards to know what goes on.

Having that said…I would like to humbly retract my former statement about Taylor being more professional this time around.

  31. But…Taylor knows that his fans aren’t going to tell him that. Not the SP, no way.

  32. So interesting. Blue…..so funny. Soulaz, I love the way you write. Aig, I love your site.

  33. Did I dream it or did I really hear him say, about 6 weeks ago, that he was going to tour Asia this summer? It seems he doesn’t always have a far reaching plan or he changes his mind or is it his ADD.. Also I clearly heard him say he was going to rock out as Taylor Hicks after every Grease show and fans discussed for 2 weeks the logistics of such a thing. Has he done that yet? Now if the above two things had been officialy released on his headquarters or TH.com, well— just imagine the bitching! I still have a problem believing he has signed onto Grease for a year. Even his Vegas AI audition wasn’t planned. Perhaps his ADD is a real problem

  34. Rosie, It’s not what he says, it’s what he does…LOL…

  35. casualfan Says:

Rosie, Taylor most likely has ADD, ADHD, OCD, BP, BPD, PTSD and PMS and Schizoid. Afterall, we attract what we put out. 😉

    Causalfan. PHD

  36. casualfan Says:

And include IBS in there also because he is an ass at times…

  37. AHAHHAHAHA Casualfan.

I mean you could start a really long list of things he’s said he’s going to do but hasn’t.

    1. Acoustic tour
    2. Playing a mini concert after Grease
    3. CD in the fall
    4. WATW to be released last year, the year before that…
    5. Going to tour this spring
    6. Going to tour this summer
    7. Show up on AI last season

Oh, I’m sure there’s more, but I’m still in a fog. I think it’s the weather.

    Feel free to add.

  38. bring real music back?? BSD?? I don’t think so…..

  39. Well, well, well….and you people talk about the Soul Patrol being controling and thinking they know everything Taylor….Have you listen to yourselves. Taylor doesn’t sing the right songs, Taylor shouldn’t do Grease, Taylor doesn’t know how to conduct himself or his business. For Christ sake..chill out and give yourselves fucking shake It’s really none of your business and if he doesn’t do anything right find an artists who does in your educated opinion before you all get ulcers.Your worse then the SP ever could be. You sound like a bunch of spoiled children.

  40. Snowstorm Says:

He’s going to record his cd in NYC while doing Grease on Broadway.
    He wrote 30 songs.

Taylor needs a good manager and assistant who can get things done. Lately, it’s been the Taylor and Bill comedy team.. laughable.

  41. Hey gigi…thanks for posting.

As a fan, the way he conducts himself in his business matters is my business.

  42. Snowstorm Says:

Taylor needs a kick in the ass or his career will disappear. You don’t have fans…you don’t have a career PERIOD.

  43. Damn…I forgot about bringing real music back to fucking pop music.

  44. casualfan Says:

Snowstorm-He did write 30 songs for his cd…problem is that only a few are actually on the cd with the rest being covers from other people, which is cool. But he shouldn’t put something out there then not follow thru on it. And gigi it is our business because we are the ones spending money on him so he can have a career.

Oh and I can add the Sybil syndrome….very popular one!

  45. It doesn’t matter if an event is announced on his “official sites” or not, at this point. Remember that Beatles tribute show? Someone ferreted out the information that Taylor would be appearing, and the next thing we knew, fans were buying tickets and booking travel.

This appearance was never announced on any of his sites, and ultimately he did not do the show. There were a lot of angry fans, who spent money they wished they hadn’t. Was it Taylor’s fault for not announcing he would not be at a show that he never announced he was doing in the first place? Was it the fan’s fault for posting information they had located prematurely and getting the fanbase all excited about nothing?

These types of misunderstandings could be totally avoided if Taylor had an effective internet management team, empowered to provide accurate and timely updates about Taylor’s upcoming events. It wouldn’t take long for a team of professionals to establish themselves, within the fanbase, as a trusted and reliable source of information. If that were to occur, then we wouldn’t have those types of situations where fan-posted information is treated as gospel truth and acted upon in error.

The current speculation about a Taylor appearance at the opening of the American Idol Attraction at Disney World in mid-February is another example. Providing specific details about whether or not he is appearing, if his appearance includes a performance, and whether or not it is open to the public is something that could have happened by now, if he had an effective team managing the dissemination of information to his online fanbase.

  46. A couple of years back, I wondered if I’d be around Taylorville much longer, and here I am….now I’m wondering, will I be around 6 months from now? There’s something about Taylor Hicks that keeps me hanging on….and hoping for the music I envision him doing. But maybe what I’m listening for…he isn’t going to sing.

  47. Virtual Speak Says:

Oh, wasn’t he “possibly, maybe” going to sit find some rooms to play when he was in NY? 🙄

  48. Yep VS, he did mention that too.

Caro, I find myself doing the same thing. Not really sure why either…I was reading on another blog today and one of the posters pegged it.

I’m waiting for Taylor to make me “feel” the music again. I’m waiting for him to sing something to make me hold my breath, to make my heart race, to make me feel alive. He’s done it before and I just want the feeling back. I guess I want it so bad that I’ll wait around for it. He’s the only singer who has ever done that to me. So, I just keep hoping.

  49. I don’t think he lied when he said all of those things on the list. His ADD may cause his mind to go in several directions at once without a concrete plan of action to follow thru. My point was at least the Asia tour and the mini Grease concerts and just about everything on the list, was not put on any official site and he can pretend we just dreamed hearing him say those things. He believed all the things he said he was going to do when he said them. Only blame him for not doing anything that he authorized to be listed on his official site. The less on there the better. We knew he was going to France about 3 days before he went. We believed he was really there doing pre production, because he left a recorded message from France. There is some madness to his methods, but we love him anyway.

  50. Except he isn’t the only singer to ever do that to me…LOL…that sounds mmmmm…just sayin’! I just want the “quality” back of singers that I miss hearing (mostly because they’re dead….), Marvin, Robert Palmer, Stevie Ray Vaughn….just because I loved, loved their voices. I thought Taylor would do that for me too. But AIG…..BSD….ain’t it. I hope his CD is great, I really do.

  51. casualfan Says:

Grey, that’s it and I’ve said that from the beginning. The die-hards fawned, worshipped and drooled over this “Grease” gig but it didn’t do anything for me but upset me because we were all promised the music which we never got.

  52. IAG……as a fan of Taylor’s or any other artist i love I think my job is to enjoy the product they put out. Their business are NOT my concern. I love Disney World…when I’m there I enjoy it , spend my money and come away smiling..much like a Taylor concert..aside from being a Disney fan I could give a flying f**K how they conduct their business and I’m sure they wouldn’t appreciate me telling them. I am smart enough to know I don’t have the credentials.

  53. Also, regarding the 30 songs. Taylor never once mentioned that all of these songs would be on the next cd, for christ sake. Did you all really take it literally that he wrote them all for this cd. jeeeez!!!!!!!

  54. Gigi…calm down.

    It’s not all that serious.

  55. *just passing through in a clown suit , juggling while riding a unicycle to lighten the mood. And…I’m…gone*

  56. The thirty song thing is just an example of what Taylor says and what actually happened or happens doesn’t always mesh with reality.

No communication is better than bs communication.

  57. Found this on the Boogie . . .

    http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/premieres/

According to this, Yahoo will premiere Taylor’s video on 02/17! I’m really looking forward to seeing it. Because I still really like Taylor, even if I discuss certain things from a critical point of view.

    I’m pulling for him 100% – honestly.

  58. *just passing through in a clown suit , juggling while riding a unicycle to lighten the mood. And…I’m…gone*

    Damn traveling circus.
    😉

  59. IAG……believe me I am about the calmest person you’d ever meet. But BS is BS and when I see it I point it out. I thought people on this blog could voice an opinion…..but only when it is negitive.
eysial…What excatly did Taylor say about those 30 songs? Could you enlighten me?

  60. Do comments with links go to your spam filter? I just tried to post a comment with a link to Yahoo music, which shows that they will be premiering his video there on 02/17.

I found the information on the Boogie . . . I’m really looking forward to seeing the video.

  61. Ooopsy, I meant spam folder.

  62. casualfan Says:

Being a fan of Taylor Hicks is like riding The Simpsons ride at Universal Studios. It gives you the illusion that you are actually on a wild roller coaster and riding with The Simpsons. The truth is you are lifted a few feet off the ground and with the wonders of computers and hydrolics you are transported into a world of make believe and never actually move. Same is applied to Taylor…what you see is NOT what you get.

  63. Gigi . . . Rosie, Brightlite, TaylorFan06 and JerseyIrish all post very positively and have dissenting opinions quite often. I think IAG has made them feel very welcome on her blog.

    That’s been my observation.

  64. Absolutely, I agree soulaz….I sometimes need the optimism of those posters….it helps me to hope for the best in Taylor. Gigi, read all the comments….it can be quite interesting here.

  65. soulaz….I have also seen these positive posters, when guestioning a negitive poster, being told everyone is entitled to their opinion, However when they are questioned the same response in NOT forthcoming.
However I am not here to argue. I don’t dwell on what is wrong with people…I much prefer to see the positive in them. When I am perfect then I will expect perfection from others…til then when I’m your friend or your fan I will always see the positive. And I am not naive…just loyal.

  66. taylorfan06 Says:

I’m with you gigi. I am a fan who will ALWAYS support Taylor. To me, he has delivered in many ways. He delivered on AI, his TV appearances, on record, and DEFINITELY live!

I love his voice and his music. He has brought me a lot of joy with that music and has turned me on to the music of many, many of his idols. For someone his age, I am so impressed with his knowledge and taste in music. His favorite songs are eclectic ranging from “Total Eclipse of The Heart”, and “I Will Survive” to the music of Van Morrison, Bob Seger, and Sam Cooke.

I think he’s a good guy who doesn’t need to trash talk things or people. I’d call him a class act. My love for music, and my musical taste is as vast as Taylor’s which is why I identify to him in that regard.

I have all his CD’s, downloaded WRIR, plan to buy WATW, I’ve got my tickets for “Grease” AND his shadow tour at The Roxy. I feel lucky to have him and his music in my life. I can live will all the decisions he’s made and wish him nothing less than a happy, prosperous, and long career.

That is my opinion which is the reason for this site.

If others here need to call me out, so be it, but to me, Taylor definitely adds a positive to my life. The way the world is heading, I think you can’t have enough positives these days. Let’s try to support and trust him on his career decisions. He appears to be happy from what I’ve seen.

  67. casualfan Says:

What I enjoy most about this blog are the posters and the diverse opinions being offered here. Most of the blogs or boards with Taylor Hicks as the subject usually go from one extreme to the other. The most interesting lesson I have learned from the SP is there is no middle ground…either you are an “innie” or an “outie”. The good folks that post and pretend to defend Taylor’s honor and to say that we should support his decisions are the very ones I don’t trust. I have seen too many of these “do gooders” defend Taylor then run off to another blog, declare themselves “true” fans and then bash the posters they don’t agree with and even creating blogs about them.

There….I have had my rant for the day.

  68. jerseyirish Says:

Soulaz, Just saw that the video is set to release 2/17 thats great news, can’t wait to see it, thanks for posting.

    JI

  69. *currently being trampled by a run-away elephant. still juggling, though*

  70. casualfan….I don’t know what other Taylor sites you frequent, but I have a few I enjoy and never ,and I mean never have I seen anyone come on them and say “I just defended Taylor on another blog, what a true fan I am”. I am curious where you have seen them.
I am Taylor fan,and If that means I am a card carrying member of the soul patrol then I don’t apoligize for that either, but I am neither an “innie” or an outie.Just a fan. I have never been dissapointed by his talent or his voice and that’s all that matters to me.

  71. Virtual Speak Says:

taylorfan06- I believe Taylor adds something to everyone’s life here. That’s why we post here. Contrary to people thinking this is a hate blog. We are fans. Fans that have an opinion. I support Taylor as much as the next person.

But, to say I support everything he does.. No. I can’t say that I do. The NY Grease thing I found amusing. It probably was a good move for him at the time. Now. I hate the fuck out of it. I hate that he’s wasting his God given talent on a five minute bit part. I understand it’s a great way to get his “mini tour” funded. But, it still blows monkey ass.

Of course he delivered on A.I. because it was a singing contest. He was there to win it. You can’t really think he’s delivered on every TV appearance. His 4th Of July appearance was beyond atrocious. The only saving grace to that performance was the sweet split second when he dropped the “f bomb” 😆

  72. Gigi, this blog is fair and well rounded.

  73. Rosie….to each his own…everyone is entitle to an opinion, right.

  74. VS, He was tired of funnen himself. I heard that with my own Soul Patrol ears.

  75. Gigi, the first major blog I ever posted on was Morphs, just last summer. I am a huge fan of the man and just like to spread the joy. Give it a try, you might like it. There is freedom of opinion on this blog.

  76. spinshack Says:

“He might believe that by withholding information, the value of his currency is increased, but the exact opposite seems to be true.”

I’ve said that before myself. Man, you can take the boy out of Bama but you can’t take that Bama outta the boy. He’s coming across embarrassingly small time, embarrassingly short sighted and embarrassingly out of touch with the reality of what he needs be doing. Pride comes before a fall so let’s hope his pride’s not so large he can’t see when he may be wrong.

Rosie said, “Also I clearly heard him say he was going to rock out as Taylor Hicks after every Grease show and fans discussed for 2 weeks the logistics of such a thing.”

You are exactly right, Rose, he did say that many times and yet to date is not doing that in the show. Was that ever to really happen or was that just bullshit coming from his mouth to get attention? ADD indeed.

gigi, please honey. Look at what you wrote. Enabler you might be. He said in a few press points that he wrote over 30 songs For This New CD. Yes he did. Are they on it? Reality check darling. Regarding positive posts are you reading all of them or are just the ones not lining up with your fairy tale making it to the gray matter? This is a great place to talk Hicks but it’s not the place to censor nor glitterize every element of the man’s career, action or whatever.

Caryl, love your elephant comment. I GET IT. ahaha! I like to just jump in the fray and go at it. Zena Warrior Go I!

  77. You know why I love this blog?

I don’t either, I was hoping someone could tell me.

    HAHA!!

  78. It is ironic that during this thread Griz found and posted on the BB the news about the video of WRIR.

  79. spinshack Says:

    Isn’t it Ironic… don’t ya think… a little too ironic, I really do think.

So Griz took time away from fighting chrolls (how very lame is that?) to post information? wowser.

  80. casualfan Says:

    oooooooooooo…Spin great post!

  81. spinshack Says:

rhonda I love this blog ’cause of people like you. And Rosie. And YKW. And Virtual, doc, and Grey, esp. and the list goes on. Oh, and even Bright our hippie, moon unit Spirit Momma chick.

  82. casualfan Says:

I LOVE it when Taylor drops the “F” bomb. “Hollywood Nights” is a classic and Taylor earned a ton of respect from this “casual fan” CLASSIC!

  83. Rosie, it’s even super-de-dooper MORE ironic that I posted twice in this very same thread about Yahoo’s premiere of his video on 02/17.

I think I even said I was looking forward to seeing it, and that I am pulling for Taylor all the way. A sentiment I’m sure most people posting here share, even if like me, they can look at certain things with a critical eye and recognize that Taylor is far from perfect.

  84. Virtual Speak Says:

It is ironic that during this thread Griz found and posted on the BB the news about the video of WRIR.

Nope. griz is is the SP super slueth. 🙄

    Hey Soulaz! Great find!! 🙂

  85. WaitForMe Says:

I’m not sure if anyone here owns their own business. I do.
I know sometimes I say I’m going to do something and then have to change things down the line, to the get the money made.
It seems like Taylor has to do this frequently in the business he is in.

  86. Yeah, great find indeed . . . I found it on the Boogie, in Griz’ thread.

  87. Spinshack….I’m sorry if my post was not to your liking. However a condesending attiude is really not necessary. If being sarcastic brings you joy…I have big shoulders I can handle it. Oh by the way, I did here Taylor say he wrote 30 songs. Never heard him say they would all be on this cd. Could you share your reference so I can get the whole story?

  88. I don’t believe anybody thinks/thought there would be 30 songs on one album. That’s just ridiculous.

And why such the snappy attitude? Nobody here is biting you. Or is that what the problem is? Cuz I can definitely help out if need be.

  89. Virtual Speak Says:

When did anyone ever say he said they’d be on the CD? The fact remains he did say he wrote over 30 songs at that BBQ. So far his CD looks like several covers and a few co-writes.

  90. OK, first of all, if he says he wrote 30 songs, you would assume that some of them would be on the cd.

Second of all, how do we know the songs are all covers? Are we speculating that they are covers or did Taylor say it? I don’t think we should jump to conclusions, until the cd comes out.

  91. Spin, Spin, Spin…Have you evah been to Alabama? I was really warming up to you too!

That’s okay. Actually we prefer people to believe we are back-woods, bare foot, drooling, inbred idiots. That way y’all won’t come down here and spoil the beauty of this great state! Oh, your grandparents are here (the Snowbirds). Can we send them back now?

  92. Oh, and if any of y’all live in Conn. Will you please come get my brother-in-law? We can’t get him to leave!

Think she’ll mind if we call her Dweezel? Not thinking she’d enjoy Central scrutinizer… 😉

  94. “OK, first of all, if he says he wrote 30 songs, you would assume that some of them would be on the cd.”

Well of course I would have expected a few original songs to be on the album. And, hey…guess what? There MIGHT BE! *shocked face* Unless there’s more info on the album that I haven’t seen yet……(which could totally be the case, I’m a slacker)

But if anybody actually thought ALL 30 songs would appear on one album…well I’d have to laugh at them a bit. That and I know how men like to up there numbers…..you know…..8 inches means 5. 30 songs could mean 2. HAHAHAHA!!

  95. Fairhope – no diss intended to Alabama. yes, I have been there many times. Sat in the President’s box at ‘Bama games. My kid won through hard work a quarter of a million dollars of moola for the college there. I have my respect and love for Alabama. No diss on Bama, it’s more like Hicks’ not taking the situation at hand in a professional manner – he’s still thinking Bar level. Never doubt I will always have a hard felt love and respect for that state and everyone I ever met there. It is truly a state stars should fall upon. I apologize if my flippant and attempt at levity insulted you.

Gigi, I’m not being condescending, just sarcastic, with humor, and I know many involved with Soul Patrol have absolutely no sense of humor. Sarcasm, true wit do bring me much joy, as do people with a sense of humor and intelligence.

Hicks said a while back, he Wrote 30 Songs for this record. Granted no record would carry 30 songs. I’d think at least one would make it. No?

It was in numerous interviews gigi, and I’m not one of those saps who keep all that shit in my computer for reference in ‘files’.

  96. Dude, Virtual you are killing me! You know about Central scrutinizer? I am so stoked!

  97. Virtual Speak Says:

Dude.. of course I know about the Central scrutinizer! All of us Catholic girls do.. 😆

  98. I miss Charcoal.

Would it be too boring to return to the original topic? I just can’t wrap my head around Taylor NOT taking more advantage of the Internet. Remember that quote of his? “If you want to play music, you find the guy who owns the bar…” (how did that go?) “You breathe it, live it, buy it dinner it, play slap n tickle with it, and break up with it before New Year’s.” Wait. That’s not right.

But you get my point. The guy is so determined to play his music and yet he isn’t using one of the most powerful tools to keep his fanbase interested and growing. I just don’t get that.

  99. taylorfan06 Says:

Sarcasm can also be annoying. It has nothing to do with a sense of humor. Funny is funny, sarcasm, not really funny.

  100. Calm down…….

  101. The American Dream is always waiting for those who try to achieve that which they ultimately can’t quit muster the sauce to cover the noodles to make the meal. My name is Bobby Brown…

  102. tf06 you epitomize that lack of humor that the SP embraces, funny is as funny does. Life is like a box of chocolates.

Charcoal is reading, just not inspired perhaps, Caryl. Funny Rose thought it was a girl. lol

  103. Virtual Speak Says:

Sunny- I knew that song was coming! 😆

  104. Yeah, boring to return to topic because nothing can be done to rectify the situation. It’s man made. No wait, Taylor Made.

  105. Why thank you.. I love to annoy, lol! Actually, I thought I was being nice and fair to Mr. Hicks and I’ve been pretty quiet today.

  106. I haven’t read the word “balls” once tonight. Now I miss Rosie.

  107. I noticed that today, Snow – you were being so quiet. I thought perhaps you were just well, resigned to the fact that this topic has no answer, no remedy since, we’re not like some of the in-folks out there with ‘contacts’ with Mr. Hicks. We’re just part of the masses who like to talk about – well some do- his ass’es and what not. I abstained as well. Too – real life called and well, I responded. Briefly.

  108. Caryl, I thought you were about elephants tonight.

  109. Do you guys know who charcoal is? Let’s take a poll.

  110. Rhonda you are a boogier, aren’t you?

I don’t know what I’ve been enjoying more. The sarcasm or the complete lack of humor concerning the sarcasm. 🙂

For about 3 years Taylor has told us many things that didn’t exactly end up being the truth. The fact that the rose glasses wearers continue to insist he hasn’t done that and still believe everything he says amuses the hell out of me.

    Communications breakdown all around.

  111. Do you guys know who really made Taylor Hicks on-line what he became?

  112. spin! Don’t “out” him!

  113. I’m just talking about it. Caryl – you’re outing him.

  114. ‘Sides he don’t mind.

  115. I knew he was gay.

  116. hahaha, it was those pink shirts right?

  117. To “whatever” real men wear pink. hah!

  118. And he never came on to me. He MUST be gay. haha

  119. Virtual Speak Says:

Sunny have you been hittin the hard stuff? Don’t do it! 😆

  120. (The avatar was mauve….)

  121. Hard stuff? What kind Virtual? Liquid or man made?

  122. I knew he was gay.

LOL!!!! Y’all are cracking me the hell up tonight!!
Or maybe it’s the cheap chardonnay.

  123. Nope, never been on the Boogie……

  124. Wow, I was just reading about Rhonda being a ‘boogier’ and that just sounds funny. *giggles*

  125. Virtual Speak Says:

Liquid but if you have a man made gray haired one hanging (pun intended) around send him to Reston, VA.. k?

    😉

  126. spin, I think Virtual’s on to something! Whatchu smokin, girl?

  127. oops Rhonda, you’re not a boogier. *giggles* I’m glad – I don’t know why really.

  128. Now that we’ve destroyed another thread, I’m off to bed. My work here is done.

    (j/k, itsallgrey!!)

  129. War Eagle, Spin!

  130. Reston, VA loves me. So do those big ol’ hidemyassers. Virtual, I’m actually drowning tonight. In liquid. Not smoking *sadness*.

  131. Fairhope no no no, ROLL TIDE!!! is my cry!!!

It’s all good. (hugs) In all seriousness, I love Alabama, any shape any form. Always will.

  132. Love ya Grey. Thanks for all we are growing here.

  133. Hmm 8 inches of man made hard stuff!

  134. I want what you’re smoking Rosie lass, hahaha. Wow. I think you and Bright share – stuff. lol

  135. I want some………..stuff!

    Sharing is caring!

  136. Ok, what the hell just happened?

  137. Uh oh, moms’ home. *hides booze*

  138. I think I had too much stuff tonight, Rhonda. 😆

  139. Virtual Speak Says:

Only 8 inches rosie? Nice starter set.. 😉

  140. so everyone has stuff except me huh?

    nice.

  141. Hides, Um…opps drank it… Love the stuff anyway. Hey Grey, Rhonda you still up? Heading off to bed now myself. But you know Tomorrow the Sun will come out again.

  142. i’m so not clicking that. hahaha….

and I am goin to bed too. GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD RIDDANCE! 😉

*takes the rest of your STUFF with me*

  143. I’m up..for a little bit.

I think I love you guys. hahahhahahha

  144. “gigi Says:
    January 29, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Well, well, well….and you people talk about the Soul Patrol being controling and thinking they know everything Taylor….Have you listen to yourselves. Taylor doesn’t sing the right songs, Taylor shouldn’t do Grease, Taylor doesn’t know how to conduct himself or his business. For Christ sake..chill out and give yourselves fucking shake It’s really none of your business and if he doesn’t do anything right find an artists who does in your educated opinion before you all get ulcers.Your worse then the SP ever could be. You sound like a bunch of spoiled children.”

Smartest thing said on this blog so far.

  145. Virtual Speak Says:

Oh, 15… honestly.. trolling is so 2006. I thought you said Shadowless said the smartest thing yesterday?

  146. Here’s something to say while I’m in a talky kind of mood:

I appreciate everybody’s opinion on this blog. I think that by letting everybody express themselves, we’ve created some really good discussion here. 🙂 I hesitate to say that I’m proud of everybody for being grown up and stuff…cause then it makes me sound like the mommy…and I don’t want to be like that. So yeah.

  147. How ironic, I really do think; 15 you just don’t know which way the wind blows… Trolling is great when fishing… for real fish. You on the other hand are trolling for crap carp.

  148. Love you Grey. ((hugs))

  149. hehe…mommy.

you know i’m gonna call you that from now on, right?

    😉

no really, I’m going to bed now. bye! haahaha

  150. night rhonda.

spin, check your email. pronto, sister.

  151. Missed this the other night – sent ya an email this a.m.
