I’ll give it a Nine…teen.
Through the magic of the internet and some now unemployed intern’s screw up, many of us heard Taylor’s latest exercise in Modern Whomp today, named Nineteen. Let me start by saying that I like the song. It’s different than what I expected of Taylor, and his voice seems to lend itself to the country vibe. I think it could really go somewhere on the country stations and overall his voice sounded good.
That being said, to me it seemed like in the verses, he was struggling to get to the right key. I don’t know what that was about. Was it the arrangement? Was it his allergies? Was it the pack that he smoked the day before? (I’m just kidding, soul patrol, don’t get your panties in a wad). People will say that I’m being too picky or harsh on poor Taylor. But, it was just an observation of mine. I don’t think that people who aren’t as invested in Taylor as we are will even pick up on it. Overall though, I think it’s a good song and he did a good job with it.
So, let’s give a cheers to Taylor…this CD seems to be something worth waiting for!

Great song!!! It really honors “our boys” in the military. Very signifigant, yet sad also. Job well done, Taylor.
January 22, 2009 at 2:31 pm
that’s “significant”.
January 22, 2009 at 2:36 pm
I deleted 15minutes comment. 15, when you have something to say that will contribute to the discussion, then it will be allowed.
January 22, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I am still not so sure about the song. I guess that I would not have imagined Taylor singing something like this and I agree that at some points he seemed like he was stretching a bit.
January 22, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I think the song is good. I’m not a huge fan of country, but I actually think it would work well on country radio.
January 22, 2009 at 3:01 pm
What kind of surprised me was how different it is than WRIR. WRIR seems a little bit like the Backstreet Boys to me and this is pretty country to me. I think it could be played on country stations. I liked it and thought Taylor did a good job(I say this knowing if it was another artist I might regard it as opportunistic) I wondered if Taylor might be doing several genres on one album and see what sticks.
January 22, 2009 at 3:09 pm
iag, I am so glad I got to hear it before it disappeared, just loved it. Looks like this CD will have a little for everyone!!! π

It’s the all american, right to be free slightly protest, but don’t push to far, fight for your rights, tug at the heartstrings by pouring your soul into a singer/songwriter story about a boy from the south that had a dream.
Familiar somehow..
By the way, I really love it. Pure gold with the right push.
January 22, 2009 at 3:48 pm
It contributed. It had to do with your attitude that shows in your blog.
You just didn’t like it. So you censored it.
January 22, 2009 at 4:02 pm
My humble opinion is that commenting on the SUBJECT contributes to this discussion, not commenting on posters or IAG’s perceived attitude.
I got a chance to hear “Nineteen”, too. I am a fan of country music and I think Taylor sounds a lot like Darryl Worley! I really liked the sound of that song, although it did sound like he was straining a bit in the top ranges. But that’s just his voice, I think.
January 22, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Hmmm…since it’s MY attitude that shows in MY blog, if you don’t like it, don’t read it.
January 22, 2009 at 4:12 pm
The country fans from the south and heartlands will eat it up. What with O’bama wanting the troops home in 16 months, the lyrics can speak to both sides of the political spectrum. It is not a war protest song but it does bring home the tragedy of war while being a patriotic song.
January 22, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I liked the song, too. Smart move to go patriotic, very relevant.
January 22, 2009 at 5:09 pm
That’s what I was thinking too, Caryl. It’s very “current”.
January 22, 2009 at 5:44 pm
It appears someone working for rocket science screwed up and put the 2nd single up instead of the first single. Now I would hope any fan of Taylor will not put it back on the net. So far so good. I’m serious about this as it could really hurt Taylors bottom line sales, thus success in the music business. We fans who heard it can just tell others it is good and worth the wait.
January 22, 2009 at 5:54 pm
How could putting it back up hurt Taylor’s bottom line sales?
January 22, 2009 at 6:10 pm
It really does have a current feel. Kudos to Taylor and the producer for capturing the essence of the musician this time around. I wish I could say that I liked it; I am a music first, lyrics second person and so it was boring for me on a musical level. I am hopeful there will be some upbeat songs on the new album, some of that jamfunk from that awesome lineup of a band.
January 22, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Grey, everything Taylor and his team have decided to do this time around, from song selection, musicians, producer, arangement and what single to release 1st, 2nd, etc. was done to get the biggest impact. Lets take Daughtry, first there was Its Not Over, those that loved him plus those who never heard of him, but heard the single on the radio, bought his CD. Next Home was the single, and people who never watched AI, but heard it on the radio went and bought the CD. This is the way CD’s have staying power on the charts. If one is lucky they get 4 or 5 hit songs and the CD sells for 2yrs. If Taylor wants it out there than fine , it will be.
January 22, 2009 at 6:57 pm
I have a feeling that song will be back up again – very cool we had a short glimpse of it. Likely an intended glimpse. π
Grey, you’re gonna get that page up yet on 15’s site. hahaha! It can’t talk about censoring since they highly manipulate and censor anything on their site.
I liked that song, but Darling Man pointed out the vocal issue to me – initially I missed it caught up over hearing another tune and one so different.
January 22, 2009 at 7:02 pm
I noticed that the vocals weren’t top-notch, too. Maybe it wasn’t ready and that’s why it was pulled?
January 22, 2009 at 7:10 pm
I read that this is a cover, right? I hadn’t heard it before. If it’s a cover, well, you know how country songs are. Once you know the hook, the novelty is worn off, and it isn’t as effective the next time. Does anybody know if another singer had a big hit with this song? If so, Taylor’s impact will be diluted. Also… I wonder if it would come as a big surprise to Taylor that people are assuming this is a country song.
January 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm
OK, Maybe I’m going deaf. Only listened 4 times and nothing sounded off. My rose colored glasses broke by Dec. 2007, but I do have other dollar store pairs that work well for reading blogs. There has been no hit song of this. You can google to hear a version that sucks, and at the same time the lyrics are posted, for those of you who enjoy analyizing lyrics, when you are not into being voice experts. Am I being cheecky, or even a bit snarky? I think I am. Hey, all I want is to hear Taylor on the radio and perhaps see a video of him on my on demand music station which I pay for with my basic Balto County Cable. Then too this song could get on the country station on TV. Why there could even be a video! WRIR, Nineteen and perhaps some others from his new CD could be hits. OMG, maybe this time around, he could not only have 1,000,000 shipped, but sell that and more. He could tour the entire USofA, small and larger venues. There would be no more press or even lowly bloggers asking what happened to Taylor Hicks. Why he may be a star in music and even acting. The bottom line for me is I believe he has talent and has been working very hard and deserves success. Given the two songs I have heard, the guy has not jumped the shark, and is swimming in clear blue water.
January 22, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Rosie, Very nicely put, the two songs we have heard so far are great and like you said he is swimming in clear blue water!!
JI
January 22, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Maybe his next starring role can be as The Tidy Bowl Man!!!
LOL!
Settle down, SP’ers… I’m just cracking myself up! π
January 22, 2009 at 9:40 pm
It is definitely interesting…the different genres. Nineteen “feels” country and Taylor seemed to pull out his southern twang for that one.
January 22, 2009 at 9:42 pm
You can go to Soulthing.net and hear it still. BTW, IAG, I don’t think they like you over there. What up?
January 22, 2009 at 9:45 pm
YKW, Those that know me, know that on special occasions I just go off. Soul Patrol or not, I try to stay real about Hicks. This time around it is looking pretty damn good, so far! I enjoy your sense of humor!
January 22, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Oh, I have it Fairhope. I don’t have to go to that website for the song.
January 22, 2009 at 9:51 pm
And Rosie, I will agree with you … while I don’t want to really like the single, b/c I think it’s a bit cheesy, I’m old enough to confess that I find myself humming along. Dammit.
And I’m VERY excited about some of the other tracks too!!! I think that the next few months are going to be very interesting. π
January 22, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Jersey, thanks. I know often I do not back up others opinions when I agree and I am fine when no one agrees with me. I just try to “keep it real”, within my own mind and heart.
January 22, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Actually, I don’t really care what he sings. I just want to look at him. OMG!!! Someone heal me!
January 22, 2009 at 10:02 pm
AHAHAHAAH Fairhope!!
January 22, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Fair, late last night I went nuts. You were posting on several old threads. Hey girl say whatever you have to say on this one, not 5 threads back. He is damn good looking Face to Face! Well, sadly face to face with 12 inches in between, but close enough to imagine anything and everything.
January 22, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Hell yah.. let’s face it.. the boy isn’t too hard on the eyes…
January 22, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Personally, I like to imagine him in worn jeans, a suede pullover, with bare feet … not that I do that much … nope, not me….
January 22, 2009 at 11:29 pm
YKW: foot fetish????
Rosie: what if I get in trouble for not sticking to the subject? Oh and 12 inches? That’s even bigger than i’ve heard previously!
January 22, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Hey grey…speaking of that “website”…why does Bill’s brother hang with those women?
Rosie: you better not get me in trouble cause this belongs in the Bozo blog…He’s not gonna put that doll down his pants is he?
January 22, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Oh! Now I remember what I wanted to say! Is that an orb sitting on his shoulder? Does it want a sip of his beer?
January 22, 2009 at 11:56 pm
Fair, Tay kissing Bozo was the most exciting sexual thing I’ve seen him do, including kissing and cunoodling with CL on a tropical beach! As for the 12 inches, I’ll have you know girl, I am an exclusive member of RHS’s R RATED ROOM. We there, are the only ones gifted with the ability to size things. I therefore say, 12 minus 4 = Mr. Hicks.
January 23, 2009 at 12:00 am
Fanfic is that way ——————>
π
January 23, 2009 at 12:08 am
Y’all are cracking me up. Get yer minds outta the gutter!
Phallus speculation aside, I am happy as hell that the Hicks fanbase seems re-energized.
January 23, 2009 at 6:21 am
littlewing1, Everyone seems to be happy if not with both songs at least one of them, its all good for Taylor.
JI
January 23, 2009 at 8:08 am
Well, I was going to comment on the song, but it seems the conversation has strayed…. π
I hate country music, but Taylor sounds really good here. I can’t do the repeat listenings, because the song is just to sad for me. I do think it will find life on country radio. And IMO, I don’t think releasing it early is a mistake. Yeah, people can capture it (I know I did), but they will also hear it, and (I believe) look for the new CD. Or maybe I am just too old. Am I the only one who likes to have an actual CD, with a cover and liner notes?
January 23, 2009 at 8:21 am
I like having the actual CD, too.
Yeah, I really want to know if that was a calculated move or not. If so, kudos to them…it worked.
January 23, 2009 at 8:52 am
Bad Fan, I also like to have the CD and cover already pre-ordered mine!!! π
iag, Whatever the reason, for the “slip up” it did work, alot of positive feedback on the single and thats what counts.

January 23, 2009 at 11:20 am
Okay girls! I have got to get ready for work but….Rosie you can name your price if you can show me proof of your “phallic” calculations!!
Ok, back to the real subject…Just listened to 19 again and I think it’s perfect for the red-blooded country music crowd (it’s growing on me too) but a democrat just took over the presidency and when that happens the “USA” chants and American pride always seem to dwindle. Don’t mean to step on anyone’s toes but liberals always seem so ashamed of our great country.
It would be super if Sean Hannity picked Taylor for one of his, can’t think now what they’re called, Great American concerts?
Ok, big wigs coming for a visit at work today. Gotta look sharp.
Damn you Rosie! I’ll only have one thing on my mind today!
January 23, 2009 at 12:35 pm
What? You didn’t know? You can’t have your own opinion about a Taylor song in Soul Patrol Land. You either love it or STFU. I thought you’d know that by now.
January 23, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Ha. Thing about me is that I don’t shut the fuck up too well. I love to give my opinion. π
January 23, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Taylor doing Americana Roots music is the way to go for him. Experimenting in different genres is great and suits him well.
Great blog as always Grey π
January 23, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I support Obama and I supported Clinton MY RIGHT! I usally ignore stuff and do not argue over anything online because it is pointless. Anyone who knows me knows I don’t like to argue in the crazy online world. But let me tell you what. I totally support my country and the troops fighting in a fight that should not have started. Again my right to feel that way. I love this song. I am not ashamed of our country but I am ashamed of the way people act and try to catergorize people into stupid things. So before you say someone seems ashamed of country you had better think again. Ashamed of stupid acts is not being ashamed of our country. Like I said I usually ignore things but that pissed me off to much to STFU
January 23, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Fair- Wow. That was a pretty heavy statement to make. My brother’s life was lost in the south tower. He was a Liberal Democrat.
Apparently, he must not have loved his country enough.

What a dumbass thing to say.
January 23, 2009 at 7:22 pm
15, why is it, out of curiosity, you never respond to anything no matter what in a positive way? You always target anything negative and run with it. Too until you actually say anything of wit or actual intelligence certainly you are not one to think you have any sort of upper hand in any mental debate.
Regarding Fair’s comment, to be fair broad generalizations are generally not welcomed in a diverse group. Categorization without regard for individuality creates ill will and controversy.
Considering Fair obviously watches a lot of the same programming I do I understand where she’s coming from – that said, Fair not all Liberals drag down the country. That’s what they got from your statement.
Not to run off on a tangent, just making observations.
January 23, 2009 at 8:57 pm
15, Do you ever comment about Taylor? If so I must have missed it. You could join in on the topics in a nice manner.
January 23, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Woo!! I knew I would set off fireworks with my statement. That’s why I said I did not want to step on anyone’s toes. I am so very sorry your brother died in the Twin Towers. None of those wonderful people deserved what happened to them that day. They are all angels now and deservedly so. But this war being fought is to avenge your brother’s death. And now our new president wants to close Gitmo. God help us.
What makes this country great is that we are all different and it is our right to freedom of speech. I can admit being a dumbass a lot of the time but sweet 15 “don’t go haten” and “you don’t know me”! I live in a red state and am very conservative so in your eyes that makes me a dumbass. Whatev! Thanks Spin for coming to my defense. But even Michelle Obama said that she had just recently become proud to say she is an American. My dear sweet 15 and Poetcindy…that is the types of people I refer to. And she being our new 1st lady!
January 23, 2009 at 10:43 pm
I’m so confuse, Where can I hear the song?????
January 24, 2009 at 9:15 am
Specifically for Taylor, and “Nineteen.”
January 24, 2009 at 11:49 am
Blessed is about an unborn child BL. I don’t understand the connection. But then again, I’m slow on the uptake. π
January 24, 2009 at 12:29 pm
And OMG, yes, I just deleted a comment of 15’s. Not relevant to the conversation. Still waiting on some good Taylor talk to come out of her.
Just wanted to make it clear before I have to hear the whole censorship argument again.
January 24, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Welcome, Felicia…if you want to email me..I might be able to help you with that.
January 24, 2009 at 12:30 pm
15, my point made.
Only reason you are here is to follow me, insult other posters. Really about half your site is all about me. Nice. Seems my 15 minutes is a continued thing, rather timeless actually. Thank you for your everlasting tributes.
January 24, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Virtual I think, and this is from my knowing Bright on-line a long while, she’s correlating “Blessed” about Hicks’ new music and his career. It’s a nice song. Elton has been such a prolific artist all of his career. I don’t listen to him much anymore, but I still admire all he’s given to music.
January 24, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Nineteen is an unborn child Virtual.
My take on things that’s all.
Slow on the uptake? LOL
How do you make that smilie? π
It’s cute.
January 24, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Correct Spin.
A+ for you.
January 24, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Thanks for the explanation ladies. I love that song. Well, I pretty much love everything Elton does.
Here’s a list of smilies.

I like that one the best. π
Have a nice evening all.
Be well.

So are you pro or con Taylor’s new CD?
January 25, 2009 at 12:07 am
I’ll let you know what I think of the CD when I listen to it in 6 weeks or so, if it doesn’t get moved back again.
January 25, 2009 at 2:18 am
Sexy! What up girl? DOn’t know about the CD but am pro that sweet shaking ass of his! Sorry been out and had a few drinks! Getting a little rowdy!
